Steven Schwalb Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 23 to Apr. 24, 2023.
Steven "Steve" M. Schwalb of Ocean View, Delaware, passed away April 23, 2023 at age 71 after a brief bout with cancer.

Born in Malverne, New York, Steve graduated from New York University with his bachelor's degree in industrial engineering. While in college, he met the love of his life, Laurie, who he married shortly after graduating.

Steve spent 33 years, most of his professional career, at Perdue Farms, including serving as vice president of environmental sustainability until his retirement in 2015. He was tremendously proud and honored to be interviewed for the Perdue Museum and the 100th Anniversary Celebration in 2020. In June 2022, Steve received the Delmarva Chicken Association's J. Frank Gordy, Sr. Delmarva Distinguished Citizen Award.

Steve's commitment to serving others showed through his volunteer work and leadership. At the time of his passing, he was serving in his second term as a member of the Board of Directors of the Maryland Food Bank, an organization he'd been involved with since 1999. His work with the Food Bank was one of the things he was most proud of in his life.

Steve was an avid bicyclist who completed multiple Seagull Century rides on the Eastern Shore and other cycling races in places he loved, including the Five Boro Bike Tour in New York City. In recent years, he enjoyed volunteering as a bicycle shop mechanic for ABC Ministry at nearby Mariners Bethel UMC.

In addition to tinkering with objects, Steve also loved understanding what made people tick. A natural conversationalist, he could have a meaningful discussion with anyone, deeply valuing the opportunity to get to know others. A brief walk to his neighborhood clubhouse, for which he chaired the maintenance and operations committee for years, often turned into an hour-long outing as Steve would stop to schmooze with every person and dog that crossed his path.

As a Jack Daniel's aficionado and Tennessee Squire, he looked forward to new releases to add to his collection and showcasing the meaningful and rare bottles he'd acquired over the years.

But nothing brought Steve more joy than spending time with his family, especially Laurie, his loving and beloved wife of almost 48 years, and their daughter Lindsey, her husband Chris, and Steve's grandson Logan who made him a "Pops." The whole crew enjoyed weekend visits, baseball games, good meals, beach outings, walks, and long conversations. Steve was generous with his time, his advice, and his affection. All who knew him were grateful to have loved him.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Beatrice Schwalb. He is survived by his wife, Laurie; daughter, Lindsey Neary (Christopher); grandson, Logan; as well as a sister, Elyse Besso; brother, Barry Schwalb (Marcia); and nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Maryland Food Bank (2200 Halethorpe Farms Rd., Baltimore, MD 21227; http://mdfoodbank.org/donate) or Delaware Hospice (100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963; http://delawarehospice.com/donate).

To the entire Schwalb family, please know that Steve's genuine goodness and decency were a well-established part of his character from an early age. Steve and I were students together at Malverne Jr. and Sr. HS. He was always one of the truly "good guys." May his memory be a blessing to you all.

Dear Laurie, Lindsey, and Family: John and I are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of our dear friend, Steve. He always brought such warmth and joy into a room. We will always cherish the wonderful times we all had together, especially on our two trips to Italy together. The picture below was of one of those gorgeous nights in the S. Agata villa (2018). Great memories were made there. May you rest in peace, Steve.

Laurie, Lindsey, Chris and Logan,

We were so sorry to hear about Steve´s diagnosis and passing. Steve was one of our first friends in the neighborhood. We have so many memories of really good times together...many dinners, lobster/crab feasts, holidays, happy hours, block party´s and more dinners shared together. He was always there if we needed something, always willing to help. His infectious smile, warm heart, engaging conversation and his friendship will sorely be missed.
We will always keep a bottle of Jack Daniel´s ready for a toast in his memory. We love and miss you..

A "mensch" is a Yiddish word in the Jewish religion that means a person who helps others with no expectation of a return. It is the pure satisfaction of helping others, nothing more, nothing less. It´s helping a neighbor, a friend, or someone who cannot ever return the favor. Steve had all of these traits and more. He was a "mensch" and will always be in our hearts!

Steve Schwab will be sorely missed, but his character and skills will be an inspiration long after his passing.

The eulogies and standing room only attendence at the funeral made clear how consistently his acquaintances became lifelong friends. We count ourselves blessed to be close to such a special man....and family. Laurie, Lindsey, Chris and Logan, the day you put together will be long-remembered.

While his life was much too short, its hard to imagine a better one.

Dear Laurie,
I was shocked and saddened to read of Steve's sudden passing. Steve was always so energetic, genial, and alive, it is hard to think of him as gone
The world is a sadder place for his leaving it.

And, Laurie, the two of you just set each other off so perfectly. If there is such a thing as a perfect couple, you and Steve were it. I missed you when you moved to Delaware; you both always brightened a room.

May Steve's name and memory always be a blessing and may you in time, Laurie, be consoled

Best wishes,

So sorry to see Steve leave us, we will miss him. Steve was a strong rider and could easily outpace me on bike rides and he loved to carry on a conversation while riding. What I will remember most about him is that not only was Steve a great talker, he was even a better listener. No matter the subject, he always asked plenty of questions showing that he was paying attention and was genuinely interested in what you had to say. He will be missed.

Laurie, Lindsey and family: I was incredibly saddened by the news of Steve´s passing. There are few days that go by that I don´t think of all of you as I pass by your former home next door to us. You were great neighbors and friends. You are in my thoughts as you face this loss. There are no words that haven´t already been said. We miss you as neighbors and know that we will think of you and Steve´s memory every day as we pass by.

Dear Laurie, Lindsey, Chris, family and friends,
My heart has been breaking since I learned about Steve, his illness, and now passing. I've not had the pleasure of meeting any of you but know of you through Steve. He loved talking about his family. You were so blessed to have his love. I love Steve. I can't remember when I first met him but would gather it was around 2014 when I got the F250 for the MD Food Bank Farm to Food Bank program. Steve has been 110% supportive of the Farm to Food Bank program from the moment I met him. Even after he retired, he would come and sweat it out in the field gleaning sweet corn, kale, cucumbers, whatever it was. He knew that I did not want to leave the MD Food Bank back in 2016 and helped me through that. He helped me with an appreciation dinner with technology and his "dongle" for his Mac. He was there for the 40th anniversary, for gleanings as often as he could make it . . . even after bike rides. He helped as much as he could promote the MFB and the F2FB program. I rate his passion up there at the top in regards to helping people. Thank you Lindsey for leading him to the MD Food Bank. I have a huge hole and miss him tremendously. Hugs and love to you all.
