Steven Woolley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 22 to Jan. 24, 2021.
Steven Douglas (Steve) Woolley, 71, beloved husband, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, friend and neighbor, died unexpectedly of pulmonary fibrosis on Monday, January 18, 2021, in Fairhope, Alabama. Steve was born December 26, 1949 , in San Diego, California, the fourth child of Harold Wayne and Caroline Frances (Henderson) Woolley. He grew up in cities all over the world, as the family moved wherever the Coast Guard sent seaplane (and later, helicopter) pilot "Woolley", as his father Harold Wayne, Sr. was known. From California they went to the Philippine Islands for two years, then back to the U.S. and Salem, MA; Rantoul, IL; Gretna/New Orleans, LA; Elizabeth City, NC; Fort Lauderdale/Miami, FL; and Mobile, AL. He was graduated from Frederick Military Academy, Portsmouth, VA, and from University of South Alabama, Mobile, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. In 1976 he married the love of his life, Dorothy Elizabeth (Betty) Brown; they moved to Fairhope, Alabama in 1990, where they relished life on the bay. He had a 34 year career with the State of Alabama's Department of Industrial Relations, and retired as the Manager of the Foley office of Alabama's Career Center System. He was a member of St.Lawrence Catholic Church, Fairhope. Steve loved life and living and had many interests and hobbies over the years: He held a private pilot's license, was a gourmet cook, excelled at photography, created pottery at the Eastern Shore Art Center, and played pickleball locally and at "away" tournaments. Friends and family will especially miss Steve's infectious smile, subtle wit, gentle humor, and kind and compassionate spirit. Steve was predeceased by his parents, brothers Harold Wayne (Jack) Woolley, Jr., and Thomas Frank (Tom) Woolley, and sister Dayla Seabrook (Peg) Graham. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, sisters Eloise Burnaford (Alan) of Los Angeles, CA and Cynthia Helms (Allen) of Mobile; aunt Nancy Elvrum of Seattle, WA; uncle Frank Woolley (Joan) of Oklahoma City, OK; sisters-in-law Joan Siegwald (Tom), Barbara Brown, Mary Lynn Farrell (Bobby), all of Mobile, and Nell Dulion (Lee), of Pensacola, FL; 5 nieces and 6 nephews; several grandnieces and grandnephews , and a great grandniece. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Steve's memory to a charity of your choice. Online condolences can be sent and memories shared at [email protected]

One of my fondest memories of Steve was the night he and a group of frat brothers (including me) managed to run his sailboat aground in Mobile Bay. Despite being surrounded by a bunch of bozos, Steve managed to right the ship and get us home safely. There will not come a day when he wont be missed.

Betty I was so sorry to learn of Steve's passing, my thoughts and prayers immediately went out to you and Steve. I think the finest thing I can say about Steve is he was genuinely one of the good guys, always had a smile and just seemed to be happy wherever he was at the time. His kindness should be an example for everyone, he will be missed.

My sincere condolences to Betty and all of the family. Steve was my fraternity brother and we had many wonderful times together. His smile was unique and he had a great dry wit. You could always count on Steve to come up with a very thoughtful comment that brought joy and laughter to his friends. May he Rest in Peace as he is now in the hands of God! We will surely miss him!
