Stuart Lieblich

I miss meeting you at the driving range before our round of golf.

I was so sad to hear of his passing. He was my Dr for many years and was kind, generous and caring. It will be difficult to find someone to take his place. My deep condolences to his family.

I became acquainted with Stu through my involvement with the ADSA as a speaker. It was always an honour to share the podium with him. I was also humbled when asked to contribute to a chapter in a textbook that Stu and Bob Bosack co-edited. Most recently, Stu and I presented at an International meeting in Vancouver last June. When the meeting was over, we shared clinical stories, some of which I have adopted into my oral and maxillofacial surgery practice. He was a wise and humble clinician who patients and families will miss. I drew attention to Stu's accomplishments and contributions at our recent Canadian Dental Society of Anesthesiology meeting in April 2024 and dedicated the meeting in his honour.

I first met Stu in early 2000's when I was president of the South Carolina Society of OMS. I got him to lecture for us at our annual meeting. His lecture was fantastic, we had a terrific time at the meeting and we made him an honorary member of the South Carolina Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons. Have listened to many lectures since and was always impressed. He also spoke at our SC dental anesthesia meetings. Great man. Will be missed.

I really enjoyed Stu's consummate professionalism. All of the lectures I attended as both a resident surgeon, and later as a board-certified OMS, were fantastic and you could tell he was excited about what he was teaching. You'll always be a fantastic part of my professional career. You will be greatly missed by friends and colleagues alike. Rest easy my friend.

I had the honor of working with Stu as our main advocate of the Comfort Control Clock. I am heart broken at the news of his passing. I am looking for a family member to give me his hebrew name so I can recite the appropriate Yizkor (remembrance prayer) in his honor. He deserves to have the prayers said in his memory. I am very sorry to learn of the passing of Stu. He was a wonderful individual and an exceptional clinician and teacher. His legacy will live on in all the people he has taught and treated. I remember he enjoyed telling the story about when we were roommates at the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery oral examination. When he got up one morning after a long day examining candidates, he could not get his shoes on either foot. He could not understanding why and thought his feet had swollen overnight. Then suddenly he realized he was trying to put on my shoes, which were identical to his, but they were two sizes smaller. When he told me what he had done, we both started laughing. He would retell that story to our colleagues and make everyone laugh. He will be greatly missed.

I am truly saddened and was taken by surprise at Stu´s passing. He was one of the smartest and down to earth clinicians I ever met. He made sure you learned from his wealth of experience by lacing it with humor. I may not have known Stu as well as some others, but he impacted and inspired me whenever our paths did cross. My residents were always abuzz after having spent any time with him. If the world was filled with more Stuart Lieblichs it would be a much finer place. My sympathies to his , but know his impact remains on all of those he touched... he will never be forgotten.

Stu was a genuine individual. He always gave you his best, always with a smile on his face, and always with his unique wit. Sharp with a comeback which left you laughing, and he always was more interested in you, rather than himself. We worked together for many years at the LSU Review Course, PEARLS, and as consultants together for Pacira. My best memories were golfing with him at JAWS, he never laughed at my atrocious game, we just had a great time as real friends. Stu, you are sorely missed, not only by your family, but by the thousands of people you touched in your too short life. Shalom.

The Craniofacial Team at Connecticut Children's misses Dr. Lieblich dearly. The care and attention he provided to the kids here was exceptional. He was always the first to jump in when we needed a hand for a voluntary event to benefit patients. We were all blessed to have known such a kindhearted soul.

Stuart is my uncle. I don´t have a specific memory to share but want to share that every experience I had with my uncle was filled with lightness and laughter. I will always smile when I think of him even when there´s tears in my eyes. The last time I saw him was at Brett´s wedding, dancing the night away, and that´s how I´ll remember him. I wanted to share this photo of him with my son Maximilian when he and Lis came to visit when Max was a newborn. I will cherish it and share it with Max when he´s old enough and my family will tell him all about his amazing great-Uncle. Sending all my love to his closest loved ones during this horribly challenging time. I love you all and you are always welcome in my home.

Stu was the best brother in law anyone could have. When we met soon after his brother, Mark, and I were together, 37 years ago, he was so warm and welcoming. Over the years we spent many happy, fun times together whether it was traveling or "just hanging out." We also shared the sad times and we were all a comfort to each other. My mother in law, Phyllis, used to call me her daugher in love and that´s exactly what Stu was to me, my brother in love. I will miss him terribly but will always smile when I think of him. His memory will always be a blessing. Rest in Peace, Stu.

On behalf of Stu´s extended family, I would like to express our appreciation for these wonderful, heartfelt notes written below. Not only are they heartwarming for us, but Stu would have loved seeing them. As his brother, I can attest that he never had an unkind word for any of his colleagues. He genuinely appreciated those he worked with.

The old Reader's Digest used to have a feature called My Most Unforgettable Character. Dear Stu, of blessed memory, was mine. He was smart and there are many who are smart, but few combine that with a dry wit, gracious personality, thoughtful presentations, passion, zest for life and a role model for generations of Oral Surgeons. It is with great honor to say that I got to work with Stu side by side with such an amazing team at Avon OMFS. Stu´s compassion and love is one of his many qualities that we will all cherish. One thing that I absolutely loved and will never forget is his genuine love and care in working with children of special needs and disabilities. He had a way of making them smile even when they had no hope or felt lifeless. His sincere dedication and influence impacted the lives of so many. He would always call me to come and help him with Spanish speaking families and I would always tell him " ok Stu it may not be proper Spanish I call it Spanglish" a mix between English and Spanish and he was always thankful for getting him through what was needed to say. During surgeries he would say " hey what are you doing with that gauze , no dabbing until the end" that´s one thing for sure all the surgical assistants knew. Even though there would be many time when I would still sneak that gauze in my hand and " Dab" here and there. I will never forget the time when I sucked up 3 of the surgifoam during surgery and I thought I was going to be done but instead he humored us with a joke . In that moment I felt my palms sweating and said oh phewwww. Stu always had a sweet tooth and loved his Kit Kats - when mine went missing it was no surprise who had gone into the break room to take the last of them. I am beyond grateful to have learned so much and to continue to honor his love and compassion everyday. I always loved his lectures, which were both educational and entertaining, a combination hard to achieve. Also enjoyed many conversations over great glasses of wine. He was such an incredibly special man who will be missed by so many.

A true professional, friend, boss & overall amazing person. Working with you for the past five years has been an absolute pleasure & I can´t thank him enough for teaching me & believing in me! I will miss his endless jokes, smile & laugh throughout the office. My prayers & condolences to his family. I will miss you stu.

It is with great sadness that I heard about Stu's passing. My sincere condolences to his wife and family. I met Stu when I joined the University of Connecticut in 1982. Over the years we collaborated on many patients and he was a joy to work with. Always easy going with great chair side manners. I was fortunate to have a long conversation with him just, perhaps a week to 10 days, before his passing. He did not let on how seriously ill he was. Optimistic to the end, and we left it that I would be calling soon. Alas that did not happen. He will be missed as a person, as a surgeon as a role model for many.

Stuart has been a lifelong colleague and friend. Being from Boston and being on faculty at Columbia was a strong connection and more we shared a love for teaching. Stuart was not just smart, he was "wicked smart and funny."
Always kind and respectful! A professional I am honored to call a friend. I will miss him.

I wish I had a chance to know Stu longer. Especially after reading all of his accomplishments and the messages here. Here is my personal story of why he was such a good guy, and why he'll hold a special memory for me.

I resurrected my musical life in 2023, playing open mics all around the New York tri-state region. Some of these spots were funky to say the least. One such was an open mic in Queens, mid-July, typical summer weather. A crowded venue where Stu and I clearly stood out in the crowd. Having someone to come out to see me is rare and especially at this particular spot. I think that we waited at least 2, maybe 3 hours for me to get up sing one song. One of my songs, "One Good Life to Live", has a line in it, "See your dentist twice a year, take no chances and have no fear..." I didn't know it at the time but as I sang it Stu reacted and later told me why.

So now, every time I sing this song, I'll smile and think of Stu. Yeah, I'll sing it for Stu.

As a new resident of Canton, I met Stu in 1985 at a neighbor´s poker game. I was seated next to Stu. His sense of humor and welcoming heart led me to believe he´d become one of my greatest friends. I was right.  
We played hundreds of rounds of golf together over the years, to the point where we´d finish each other´s punch lines. Stu, being a lefty, would often poke fun of himself (if we weren´t). "Standing on the wrong side of the ball", etc. One particular round that stands out was at a member-guest at our club in North Carolina. We were paired up with a member and his guest who had only one arm. We won the first two holes (thanks to Stu), and then the one-armed guest proceeded to clean our clocks...he won every hole thereafter. When we shook hands (hand?) the guy actually said, "You had me worried there for a second."  
On the ride back to the clubhouse, I said to Stu, `Can you believe we got beat by a one-armed golfer?" to which Stu replied, "...and a lefty to boot!" 
Thank you, Stu, for a lifetime of laughs and brotherhood.

Over the years Stu and I shared many patients both in the office and in the operating room. I always his appreciated his expertise and his close collaboration. I valued his friendship and comradeship. Stu made a difference in this world and improved the lives of many patients and their families. I am honored to have known him.

Stu was a great friend, mentor and true professional for all of us at Canton Valley Dental. His expertise and the way he went about treating patients will be greatly missed. Thank you for everything you have done Stu may you rest in peace.

I worked with Stu at Connecticut Children´s. He was an amazing surgeon and will be missed dearly. He had an incredibly soothing manner and was someone who could rally the troops and bring everyone together. His compassion was endless. The first time I met him he was planning a jaw surgery for a tumor on a child from Haiti and called to ask about our ability to provide compassionate care. He donated his time - and the results were amazing.
May he rest in peace and may his loved ones know that he positively impacted so many people´s lives.

I so very saddened by the passing of my good friend Stu. We had many laughs during our time together as examiners for ABOMS and following our kids at Tufts. My sincere condolences to his family. I will keep him in my prayers.

I first met Stu about 45 years ago when we were both new faculty at UConn Dental, he in OMFS and I in Family Dentistry . Fast forward found us both in private practice in neighboring buildings in Avon. I enjoyed, and my partners at Avon Family Dentistry continue to have a close working relationship with Stu's practice. He helped guide me through challenging implant cases and, in fact, extracted my last two wizzies. We retired around the same time, and I am sad that he has left us so soon.

I first met Stu when we were both young faculty members at UConn, he in OMFS and I Family Dentistry. That was around 45 years ago. Fast forward we both went into private practice and were in neighboring buildings in Avon. Stu, Joe, Mark, and Dan became our go to OMFS practice. Stu helped guide me through some difficult implant cases. My partners and I at Avon Family Dentistry will miss him. Incidentally, Stu even extracted two of my "wizzies", and for that I will always be grateful.

I had the pleasure of working in the office with Dr. Lieblich for 9 1/2 years. He truly made work enjoyable. He was incredibly talented and loved to teach and share his vast knowledge. We always joked that he could remove wisdom teeth with a fork and spoon if that was all he had. He never left a surgery without thanking the staff who assisted him. If we were busy that day he would help clear the tray from the room. None of that was below him. He always appreciated hard work and showed it. I witnessed him on many occasions show great compassion to his patients. He took care of a young boy with disfiguring tumor who never would have been able to afford that care. He changed that young man´s life. In case you don´t know this according to Dr. Lieblich "The best time to get a tooth out is tooth-thirty" and it is unsafe to drive a bulldozer after sedation. We miss him already. I want to thank him for making work an enjoyable experience.

I first met Stu when he joined the faculty at UConn in the 1980s. We loved socializing with him and his wife. Our relationship continued even after we moved. We worked together in the 90s on the ABOMS and he replaced me as a Director after my year as President, moving into that position several years later. I also had the privilege of working with him when he joined the editorial board of the JOMS as an expert anesthesia Section Editor in the 00s. We´ also golfed a few rounds over the years and continued as friends. He was one of the most intelligent, funniest, thoughtful friends I had and dearly miss him.

Every time I asked Dr. Leiblich to see one of my special needs patients, he always said yes... He was very generous with his time and skill. He will be greatly missed.

...He gave me confidence that the surgery he performed would go well. Taking a piece of my hip and rebuilding my jaw with it. The healing went so well under his care. So Thank full that Dr. Lieblich was my doctor. Bless him.

Stuart and Lis were welcomed among many new members on our New York Flyers running team. And, yet, from our first events together, it was delightful to see two people with such impressive careers and serious responsibilities enjoy every moment of a simple run or snack with friends. Stu and Lis stood out quickly for their insights and for their evident joy in each other and for life.

In Stu´s last months he remained active as a teammate and volunteered at team events. When the two of us got together, he remained as pleasant and engaged as ever. His strength of character continued to shine even in his last difficult days.

I am among the many who will miss Stu greatly in the days and years to come.
