Stuart Tobin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 30, 2024.
Stuart Harvey Tobin passed away peacefully at his home in Rancho Resort, Sahuarita, Arizona, on December 24, 2024, just two days shy of his 91st birthday. He was surrounded by his devoted wife of 38 years, Mary Lou Tobin, his three children, a granddaughter, and his two cherished dogs, Arthur and Willie.

Stuart was born on December 26, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York, to Nathan and Lillie Tobin. He grew up in Patchogue, Long Island, and graduated from Columbia University College of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Stuart served in the US Army as a Medical Specialist at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Stuart later built a life deeply rooted in Westhampton Beach, New York. There, he raised his family alongside his first wife, Lenore Kutlow Tobin, to whom he was married for 22 years. Stuart owned a corner pharmacy in Westhampton Beach and served the community not only as a pharmacist for 52 years but also as a volunteer firefighter, town trustee, and mayor. He served as an Executive Council founding member of the NY State Nurses Association at Central Suffolk Hospital for 11 years. Stuart's dedication to service and advocacy was evident through his countless Letters to the Editor and his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those around him.

Stuart loved the outdoors, especially boating and fishing, which were passions he shared with friends and family and passed down to his children and grandchildren. As an avid woodworker, no project was too big or too small for Stuart, from outdoor fences to furniture to toys for each of his grandchildren and step grandchildren, often incorporating his artistic and cartoon drawing talents into his crafts.

In 2001, Stuart and Mary Lou relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona, before settling in Rancho Resort, Sahuarita, Arizona, in 2015. He served several years on the boards of the homeowners associations of both of his residential communities. A man of faith and tradition, Stuart celebrated his second bar mitzvah at Beth Shalom Temple Center in Green Valley in November 2019-a joyous occasion with family and friends that reflected his enduring connection to Judaism. He also enjoyed monthly bagel-and-lox gatherings at the synagogue with his son-in-law, Stuart Weissman.

Stuart is survived by his wife Mary Lou, his children Jocelyn Tobin (Stuart Weissman), Alison Tobin, Michael Tobin (Danna Greenberg), and seven grandchildren. Stuart is also survived by his step daughters Theresa Sloan (Chris Newman), Kelly Sloan (Douglas Saddy), and Romi Sloan, as well as four step grandchildren and five step great grandchildren.

His legacy of love, humor, and community service will continue to inspire all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Stuart's memory to The Animal League of Green Valley or the Sahuarita Food Bank are appreciated.

May Stuart's memory be a blessing to all whose lives he touched.

Stuart truly was a blessing at Central Suffolk Hospital. I started working at Central Suffolk Hospital with Stuart in the later 1980´s. "Stu" always made us laugh, always had a smile on his face and was a very kind man. I will pray for your family.
