Washington, DC - Sue Searcy Cates Goldman, born May 7, 1924 in Dublin, Georgia, passed away October 7, 2021 at home near her daughter in Washington, D.C. Sue was a Floridian, of Tallahassee, Miami, and Indian Rocks Beach. She was a life-long student and educator, earning undergraduate and graduate degrees at Florida State University, studying at Yale University and the University of Florida, and teaching at Woodville Junior High, Leon High School (Tallahassee), and Miami-Dade Community College. Even while raising children, and then in retirement, she pursued her research interests in Florida natural history, human history, archeology, and anthropology.
Sue was a devoted wife and mother who raised and educated five children despite the early loss of husbands William Haywood Cates, Jr. (1948) and Phillip Goldman (1969). Her oldest son, Bud Cates, passed away in Tallahassee in 2018. She is survived by daughter Jan Goldman-Carter and sons Richard, Robert, and Douglas Goldman, and their spouses Mark Carter, Sharon Goldman, Suzy Goldman, and Noelle Goldman whom she loved as her own children. Sue Goldman was a devoted grandmother of ten grandchildren, Deb Cates, Phil and Nat Carter, and Jenna, Annika, Maya, Megan, J.P., Ben, and Addison Goldman; and two great-grandchildren, Kinley and Liana Carter. Sue Searcy Cates Goldman will always be remembered for her smile, her kindness, and her curiosity.
