Sue Shafer Stenstrom Jan. 1, 1930 ~ Feb. 20, 2011 Resident of Lafayette Born in Oakland, California, Sue was the youngest of the three daughters of Thomas Guy and Theo Grisham Shafer. She attended Crocker Highlands Elementary School and joined her sisters at the Anna Heads School for Girls in Berkeley. Upon her graduation in 1947 she enrolled in Mills College for her freshman year. She later transferred to the University of Washington where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She majored in English Literature and graduated in 1951. There she met and later married Tom in 1952. Sue and Tom began their married life in Sioux City, Iowa where their first child was born. They later moved to Marin County where Tom joined the family automobile business. In 1959 Tom was offered a position at Guy's Drug Stores and they moved to Lafayette where they lived for 51 years. Sue dedicated her life to her family. She was active in school affairs and volunteer work. She was a member of the Junior League of the East Bay and served many years as a volunteer at Samuel Merritt Hospital in Oakland. Sue was the loving wife of Tom for 59 years and the mother of Amy, Anna and James. She is survived by her husband, her children, her granddaughter, Kathryn, her two sisters, Sonya Kieran and Helene Loomis, her in-laws Don and Joanne Collins, and her faithful feline companion, Riley. A memorial reception is planned at a later date for family members and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to an animal rescue or wildlife organization of your choice.
