Sue Thompson Obituary

Published by Merced Sun Star from May 10 to May 14, 2014.
Sue Thompson
August 12, 1927 - May 5, 2014
As the family story goes, the doctor who delivered Annie Laurie Hardesty took one look at her and began singing the lyrics to a popular tune at the time: "Every star above knows the one I love—Sweet Sue, just you." She was forever known as Sue: Sue Hardesty growing up in Southern Maryland and Sue Thompson, the loving wife of Frank Thompson for 67 years.
Born August 12, 1927, in Prince Frederick, Maryland, Sue passed away May 5, 2014, a little more than three years after the death of Frank.  Married during World War II, Sue was just a teenager when she said farewell to her soldier husband. She would not see him for 33 months. When he returned from combat, they lived briefly in Baltimore and then moved to his hometown—Pontiac, Michigan. In 1962 they moved to Merced, California, where Frank worked as Production Manager for the Merced Sun-Star.
Frank and Sue had three sons and she was a homemaker before that title was in vogue. By every account, she knew how to make a house a home. Her boys loved to tell about the endless pot of chili, as their friends would drop in at dinner time and find a place at the table. She attended her boys' sporting events, sitting faithfully in the stands in all kinds of weather to root them on.
A skilled storyteller, Sue loved to recount her days tending a country store and romping through the woods with her brothers and sisters and friends. Her tales included a lively cast of characters from the Great Depression era: the mean and generous, the poor but noble.
Sue loved the Lord Jesus Christ and faithfully served Him by serving others, caring for people who were sick and preparing meals for anyone in need. A deaconess in her church until the day she died, everyone seemed to know her affectionately as "Grandma." She loved her family.
Originally one of eight children born to Edward and Georgie Hardesty, Sue is survived by sisters Dorothy and Mildred, both of whom live in Maryland, and by sons, Greg (San Diego), Dwight (Merced), and Paul (Dallas) and their spouses. She is also survived by seven grandchildren—Elizabeth, Elyssa, David, Jessica, Emily, Erin and Ryan—and fifteen great grandchildren.
Sue will be laid to rest with her husband at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.
A Memorial Service is scheduled for 12:00 noon on Friday May 16 at Atwater Community Bible Church, 5890 N. Winton Way, Atwater/Winton, California. Arrangements are under the direction of Whitton Family Funeral Service in Merced.
Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20, 21

"Grandma" Thompson was a big part of our family, even giving us kids gifts at Christmas. Since they lived in the neighborhood, she would often babysit us also. I'll miss her.

Suzanne, thanks for the story.

Sue was very much a part of the Sun-Star family. I remember Christmas Eve mornings, walking into the building to smell and savor the several trays of sweet buns she had baked that morning from scratch. Sue was also a skilled seamstress and made Frank some awesome waistcoats to wear to work. My sympathy to the family, and may she rest in His peace.
