Susan Maffei Begliomini

Susan Maffei Begliomini died March 13, 2017, at Celtic Hospice, Wilkes-Barre.

Susan was born Aug. 15, 1926, in Exeter, the daughter of the late Giovita Nevola and George P. Maffei.

She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Elmo J. Begliomini.

Susan was a graduate of Exeter High School, Class of 1944, and Bucknell University, Class of 1947. She received a master's degree from the University of Scranton.

Prior to retirement, she taught school at Exeter High School and then Wyoming Area High School. While teaching, she became one of the founders of the Luzerne County Science Teachers, honoring students who excelled in the sciences. She also served as president of the organization. In 1969, the student body of Wyoming Area selected her as Teacher of the Year. In 1976 she was nominated by the Susquehanna Valley Section of the American Chemical Society for the MidAtlantic Regional Chemistry Teacher of the Year. She also served as chairperson of the science department of Wyoming Area.

Susan was very active in community organizations. She served as president and historian of American Legion Auxiliary Post 833. She was a member of St. Anthony's Christian Mothers and served as secretary. She was a member of St. Anthony's Golden Age where she also served as secretary. She was also a member of the Christian Women of St. Barbara's Parish. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women where she served as secretary and a member of the Ladies of Charity as well as a member of the board of trustees of the Wyoming Free Library.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were three sisters, Vicki Steward, Josephine Balberchak, and Carol Burns; sisters-in-law, Sandra Maffei and Joan Begliomini; brothers-in-law, Richard Finch, James Burns, William Steward and Frank Crowley Sr.

Surviving are her four children, daughter, Beverly Root and Alfred , New Jersey; son, David and companion, Marguerite, Wyoming; daughter, Barbara Collins and Schuyler, California; daughter, Bonnie Mitchell and Joe of New Jersey; grandchildren, Dacia Larin and Erick, Florida; Krystal Begliomini, Wyoming; Anthony Mitchell and Briana, New Jersey; Michael Mitchell and Elizabeth, New Jersey; John Mitchell, Philadelphia; Samantha Heaton and Jake, New Jersey; great-grandchildren, Pia Vittoria Mitchell, Harlan Isaac Mitchell, Joseph Anthony Mitchell and Norah Elizabeth Mitchell.

She is also survived by sisters, Jennie Crowley, California; and Julie Finch, Maryland; brother, Carmen Maffei, West Pittston; brother-in law, Joseph Balberchak and Albert Begliomini; and many nieces and nephews.

Susan and her husband traveled throughout Europe with her sister, Jennie, and husband, Frank Crowley.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Celtic Hospice Unit for their kindness and compassion that all showed our beloved.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Anthony's Church, St. Barbara's Parish, Exeter, followed by interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton section of Kingston Township. A viewing will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Anthony Recupero Funeral Home, 406 Susquehanna Ave., West Pittston.
