O what sad news came my way this week. So many happy memories of travel and performances with your delightful and loving family.
I know Susan lives on in the life of everyone who met her. I am happy to read she continued to serve the needs of others in the way she lived. Susan is still with all of us in so many ways.... I hope you garner some small comfort in the following:

Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow;
I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain;
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

I am truly saddened to learn of the loss of your beautiful Susan. I remember with joy the year the Madrigal singers performed for our Pioneer Christmas Luncheon. I hope you will be able to find some comfort in the fact that she gave her most precious gift by being an organ donar.

Mary Ellen and Pete,
My heart broke when I received an email last night about Susan's accident. I remember the anticipation of her birth and (fast forwarding) the Christmas cards that told us she was a student at UNC and later her move to NYC. Our prayers are with you, your family and Susan's friends.

When Shannon called me last Sunday, she choked up when she mentioned Susan's name. I knew immediately that it was serious, and felt my heart break at the news. She radiated happiness and love from her whole presence! Her hugs, silliness, sweetness, and kindness will always be remembered by Shannon and myself. I am so honored to share some Carolina celebrations with her, and the giving spirit she shared with her charity work. Our weekend with her in NYC and Atlanta will always hold a special place in our hearts. I feel anyone who had the pleasure of meeting and knowing your daughtern was blessed. And I pray that you know memories of her are shared by each and every person who knew Susan. She was a special person and we loved her! Patti and Shannon Hughes

Mary Ellen and Pete, you may not recall me from BDF, but Susan was always one of my "special girls". There was always such a beautiful spirit emanating from Susan, and I used to love watching her express herself through dance. She will always hold a very special place in my heart and memory. What a remarkable daughter you raised, and what a beautiful light she brought to the lives of so many people.

Mary Ellen and Pete. All I can say is that my heart cries in hurt for you. It's hard to believe Susan was 25 years old. It's probably been more than 15 years since I last saw her as a sweet, young Girl Scout and definitely the pride and joy of both of you. Words just cannot express how I feel over your loss. But, I am a firm believer that God does not make mistakes. Keep the faith and know you are thought of and loved by others in your time of sorrow.

Mr. and Mrs. Bieber -- today, as I sat in Kenan Stadium for Meredith's graduation ceremony, a gray sky opened to a glorious ray of warm sunshine at the exact moment the students were asked to move their tassles. It was also at this moment that a News & Observer photographer snapped a photo of the dramatic change in weather, capturing my sister in the stands with the biggest smile on her face. Cheers erupted from the graduates, and all I could think of was your beautiful, miraculous daughter in that moment of complete bliss. I just knew she was the heavenly engineer behind that display. I will always feel her presence, especially among the fragrant dogwoods and moonlit brick walkways of her beloved Chapel Hill. She will forever be in my heart. I pray with you now and always, and wish you peace as you remember and honor your fantastic girl. I am eternally blessed because of the earthly friendship we shared. It will continue to live on.

Life is eternal and love is immortal and Susan’s passing is but the horizon, for her death bestows her shortened presence here and now to the realm of eternity…..and for those who shared her Love…know that she has secured her eternity…for as she passed from the living she put out her hand and touched the face of God. Our hearts are filled with sadness for your loss. Daniel W. [Eileen] Burke, Jr.

But we are comforted in our belief, as we know you are, that Susan is among the believers in Heaven, making new friends and reuniting with her grandparents, and other loved ones.
