Susan Chused Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 18, 2024.
Susan Lynn Chused of Newton, passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, on December 15, 2024 at 73 years of age. Daughter of Harry and Lenore Chused. Loving wife of John Still of 35 years. Beloved mother of Julian Still and his wife Kelsey. Sister of Judy Siegel and Wesley, Alan, and David Chused.

Susan was born in Chicago and raised in Boston and Newton. She graduated from Northeastern University and traveled extensively throughout Europe, eventually finding her true calling: food and cuisine. After a successful catering venture with her business partner, Maggie McNally, the pair opened several highly acclaimed restaurants in the Boston area, namely The Blue Diner, Venus Seafood in the Rough, and Zuxuz Cafe. The Blue Diner ushered in an era of enlightened comfort food in the Boston scene, winning Best of Boston and James Beard recognitions and drawing regular celebrity visits including the Boston Celtics, the Grateful Dead and U2.

Susan returned to catering following her restaurant endeavors, managing events for Catering by Andrew, Northeastern University, and private clients. A true chef and alchemist of food; it was, for her, a language of love. Most recently, she sat on the board of Les Dames d'Escoffier in Boston, supporting the chapter's efforts to foster local restaurateurs.

Susan met John at the Blue Diner, as partners they built a rich life together over the last 35 years, including the blessings of son, Julian and daughter-in-law, Kelsey. Active in the local food, art, and music communities, Susan had a keen intelligence, with high standards for energy and quality in everything she did, and a remarkably generous spirit for all. She is sorely missed by loving friends and family.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service at the Chapel at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham Street, Sharon, on Sunday, December 22, 2024 at 10 AM. Please follow signs to the back of the administrative building.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Susan's name may be made to Les Dames d'Escoffier of Boston at https://lesdamesboston.org/philanthropy/.

I still have a hard time believing Susan is never coming back. My last memory, I think, was having lunch in Susan and John's backyard. We always had interesting conversations and good, healthy food. She generously came to support me when Lars was in hospice in Cambridge. She is visually etched into my memory.

I just started a tribute for Susan and sent it before I was finished.
I was friends with the Chused family back in the 50s and 60s living in Matapan. We used to hang out and just do what kids do while growing up! I just saw the notice for Susan and was devastated to see the news. My condolences go out to her entire family. So sorry to see this.

I didn't know Susan well, but have met her many times at art shows and with friends. Last April Susan and Lisa Harries Schumann met me at the Newton Arts Center to see Sarah Kahn's show of collages. We had great visit (see photo below). I joined Lisa and Susan for lunch at a nearby restaurant. Somehow it came up that I had tons of raspberries in my backyard and immediately Susan described what sounded like a delicious raspberry coulis. I came home and have been making it ever since. So Susan lives on with me in this wonderful reminder and all who share in those raspberries! We had a great conversation that day - far-ranging and thoughtful about so many things. My heart goes out to her family!

We had a wonderful time with Cassandra at the Boston public library tea service. Susan was so caring and considerate with her best friend.

I remember meeting Susie when I visited Judy and Jeff in Boston. I was about 16 at the time. As the years went on we saw each other from time to time, mostly at family events like weddings and showers. I know from Judy what an accomplished chef she had become and heard about her husband, son and now daughter in law. It was very sad to hear of her passing. She and her family are in our thoughts.

I will truly miss seeing Susie's face in our Qigong classes. Now, as the ancients say, she has "dissolved into golden light". Her spirit continues to shine in our memories. Sending all my sympathy and condolences to her family and everyone who knew and loved her.
