Susan DiPietro Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 4, 2026.
Susan Charlene DiPietro, 68, of Clemmons, North Carolina passed away on February 3, 2026 in her sleep at home after continuing declining health.

Born on October 2, 1957 in Toronto, Canada, she was the daughter of Charles and Christina Phillips. Her family owned a cottage on Skeleton Lake, Ontario, and she was full of stories of days out on the boat and sunbathing on the dock. In her final weeks, these were the days she relived over and over again.

Charlene is survived by her husband, Thomas DiPietro, her daughters Christine DiPietro Michelle DiPietro, their husbands, Chris Greenwood and CJ Clark (respectively), her grandson Pietr Greenwood, sister Barbara Forsythe and her beloved dog Jade, who watched over her in those final days.

Charlene and Tom married Dec 10, 1983, on a whim. After the ceremony everyone thought they left to do the hanky panky, but they were instead getting photos with Santa Claus. (As her daughters writing this, it is nice to think that when our parents were young and beautiful and in love, they were the kind of people who might keep you waiting to sneak in love-making.)

Charlene loved to travel, and Tom was an airline mechanic who gave her a lifetime of flying benefits. They saw the world together. He was her caretaker in her final years and we (their daughters) cannot thank him enough for that.

When she couldn't find good childcare for her daughters, she started an in-home daycare. Soon she was keeping a house full of children with people calling every day, Charlene founded New Horizons Child Care on May 15, 1995, and worked to provide care for hundreds of children in the Clemmons community.

Charlene liked turning up the volume so loud that the neighbors could hear the music, once tried to initiate a food fight in her daughter's middle school lunchroom, and always encouraged us to do the more fun, more terrifying thing. To put on some mascara and go out.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Christina and Charles Phillips, and her dear friend Linda Fromal.

A funeral service will be held at Vogler & Sons in Clemmons on February 15th at 3pm.

Charlene always said she didn't like flowers but then would be delighted by a nice bouquet. But in lieu, send a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and a fond memory of her.

Charlene´s passing was entirely too soon. I so enjoyed knowing her through our Girl Scout troop´s activities. She had such a distinctive voice and infectious laugh. This writing is after her service. I left feeling uplifted (first time experience after a funeral service) because the music reflected a celebration. I honor her memory along with her family and friends.

In loving memory of my dear sister. Our cruise together to New Zealand was a precious time of sharing and caring. Charlene was always full of ideas creative ways of doing thing, and just plain fun. Family times in Canada were a celebration of her love and friendship that are deeply anchored in us. Our Canadian family will miss her greatly. So much fun and joy together. Bless you Charlene as you now can experience God's great Love for you after a life full of adventure and generosity. Thank you Tom for comforting her in her last days. Grateful for Christine and Michelle's families for loving on her so extravagantly! The photos are awesome. Love you all from Canada. Barbara & Jim

I was invited to Charlene´s house to do facials with our daughters. From the moment I met her I felt we were friends. She was so sweet and friendly. We laughed most of the day sharing our love of teaching & children. I was fortunate to see her again at Michelle´s bridal shower & wedding. These were beautiful occasions and she was the beaming mother of the bride. We managed to have a breakfast date years ago. We continued to talk about our kids. Typical proud mom stuff. I was fascinated by her travels & life experiences. She was so genuine and humbling. She was a lovely person and I am happy to have met her. She will be missed. Love & prayers for her family.
With deepest sympathy,
Grace, Dave Atterbury, & Family

As a member of one of her home daycare classes 30+ years ago, I still to this day have the happiest memories of packing in the back of the station wagon and taking trips to the local farm to feed the goats, having the most epic of
food fights in her family´s very own backyard, and having the most fun and creative learning experience under her coaching within the Odessey of the Mind program at Clemmons Elementary. To Ms. Charlene, thank you for being such a bright light and cultivating a space where children could safely learn and grow. My condolences to the family for your loss. Much Love to all of you.
