Susan Hou Obituary

Published by Chicago Tribune on Jul. 31, 2019.
Susan Hamant Hou, 72, passed away surrounded by her family on July 27, 2019. Susan was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, doctor, friend, colleague, mentor, and humanitarian who embraced life with a passion that continues to inspire us all. Her sense of adventure, witty humor, brilliant mind, compassion for others, and determination have had a rich and diverse impact on the world.

Susan was born on July 29, 1946 in Boston, Massachusetts to Daniels and Muriel Hamant. She attended Harvard University (BA), Stanford University (MA) and University of Massachusetts Medical School (MD). She trained as a nephrologist at Tufts-New England Medical Center and became a world-renowned expert in kidney disease and pregnancy. She and her husband, Mark Molitch, moved to Chicago in 1984 where Susan worked as a nephrologist at Michael Reese Hospital, Rush University Medical Center, and Loyola University Medical Center. She and Mark built a life with their three children in River Forest, IL. Susan was an avid world traveler and spoke English, Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, and Japanese.

In 1986, she and others wrote an article that was seminal in developing the concept of altruistic, unrelated living donor organ transplantation. Susan experienced organ transplantation from all angles, as a transplant nephrologist, donor of her own kidney to one of her patients, and recipient of lung and kidney transplants.

She was a humanitarian and philanthropist, establishing the Daniels Hamant Foundation to help patients who needed unaffordable medications. With Douglas Villarroel and her husband, Mark, she built Centro Medico Humberto Parra in 2001 which has provided thousands of Bolivians with medical care. She was instrumental in the first liver transplant in Bolivia.

Her parents, her sister Anne and her brother Daniels preceded her in death. She is survived by Mark Molitch; her three children and their spouses Tamara and Brian, Ethan and Bati, Michael and Danielle; her seven grandchildren Maya, Evan, Isaac, Olivia, Asha, Niko, and Felix; and her two cats Gandalf and Gabriel. We are honored to have had her in our lives.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, August 17 at 10:30AM, at the Cheney Mansion, located at 220 N. Euclid Ave., Oak Park, IL. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to Susan's legacy, the Daniels Hamant Foundation (www.hamantfoundation.org)... and please become an organ donor.

I'm so very sorry. She was a special woman, and her family must miss her terribly.

I am so sorry to see that Dr Hou has passed. She was an attending nephrologist when I was training at Rush. I remember her kindness to all patients to a fault. I remember that a patient was signing out AMA to pick up a check. She offered this patient her own money to stay in the hospital. This was the type of doctor she was. Caring, compassionate and an outstanding nephrologist. She influenced the way I practice medicine.

I'm not sure I can add much to the platitudes others have shared regarding Dr. Hou.

As her transplant patient for many years, she was an amazing and talented physician during difficult times, both physically and emotionally for me.

God bless you, and rest with the angels...

I have been a patient of Dr. Hou for over 20 years and she made a tremendous impact on my life by convincing me to get a kidney transplant. Her calm demeanor was the voice of reason for me at at a time in my life that I felt hopeless. She was truly a miracle from heaven in the way she treated me over the years and she had this uncanny ability of making me feel as though I was her favorite patient. My family and I extend our deepest condolences to her immediate and extended family. In God's infinite wisdom he has reclaimed an angel for heaven.

She was a wonderdul doctor, she always had such a comforting smile, my sister and I always felt at ease when we would come in for clinic visits. I had last seen her at the Candlelight Ceremony for Transplant recipients, and was greeted with that smile. She will be greatly missed, my deepest sympathies.

If heaven ever held a special place for someone it surely does for Dr. Hou. She was truly inspirational, unflinchingly honest, and extraordinarily courageous. She taught me to fix anything I can and to do what I know is right, regardless of who the opposition is. She gave me comfort, confidence, and hope, and achieved this all in the brief minutes we spent together in medical appointments.
She has undoubtedly changed my life for the better, and I am just one of the countless many. She was a gift to humanity.

There was no one like her. We who knew her as patients understood her passion and felt her love and care for us. She will be missed enormously and we will all grieve her loss.

Dr. Susan Hou was my nephrologist at Loyola from the time that I had my kidney transplant 2-3-11 from my son until the last time that I saw her this past May. She was a very giving and caring person. Every time that I saw her she would ask me about my son and how he was doing. She even gave me her home phone number in case I ever needed to reach her. I will miss her very much. My deepest condolences to her husband, her children and grandchildren and of course to her friends and collegues. Rest in peace,Dr. Hou.

I just received a letter from Loyola today notifying me about Dr. Hou's passing; heartbreaking even if it was expected. I was a patient of Dr. Hou's following my bilateral lung transplant in 1997 at Loyola. I started seeing her soon after as eventually I too would need a kidney transplant due to the immunosuppressive drugs. She directed me to seek a kidney transplant at UW Madison which I did as the wait time was much shorter. I found her sense of humor wonderful and once told her if the medical gig didn't work out, she could become a standup comic. I also remember when she went on oxygen she would come into the examination room without it and I would immediately tell her to go get her oxygen which she did. I feel that we developed a bond over transplantation. I was grateful that I was also able to provide a lot of medical supplies and drugs for the Hamant Foundation for use in Bolivia. Rest In Peace to one of the most wonderful persons I have ever known.

I have been a Kidney Patient of Dr. Hou since 2001 with my first kidney transplant. Dr. Hou was the BEST kidney doctor I had. I was very fortunate to have her. She always showed her support to her patients. She even gave me her home phone number to contact her if I was very upset with not receiving any information back from Loyola. I was even there when the News showed up to tape her and a patient of hers that she was going to donate a kidney to her. Even with my second kidney transplant she made sure I was being taken care of. But no other kidney doctor was as great as she was. Dr. Hou would always take time with her patients like she was sitting with her family. SHE CARED ABOUT HER PATIENTS. I'm sure her family was very proud of her with everything she's done as a Doctor. I will think of you all the time Dr. Hou.......

Susan was a knowledgeable, generous and gracious professional colleague. The sad news of her passing is a loss not only for the family, but also for her patients and the disciplines of nephrology/organ transplantation.
She will be sorely missed. My sincere condolences to her husband and family.

I was so saddened to learn about the passing Of Dr. Susan Hou. She was my nephrologist at Loyola for the past 20 years (I received my kidney in 1985) and I will be hard pressed to find a replacement as knowledgeable as she was and in whom I could place my complete trust and confidence. She took a special interest in my children, especially my daughter, who was born while I was still on dialysis. Over the years, I was amazed to learn of her many contributions to those under her care, especially her selfless sacrifice of giving up a kidney to one of her patients. I was happy to donate my unused medications to her free clinic in Bolivia.
It seemed so unjust and cruel that she herself would require two organ transplants in her later life.
Sincere condolences to her husband and beautiful family (I always got a photo at Christmas). May the many happy memories of her help to sustain you all through this most difficult time.
