Susan Lanning Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 17 to Apr. 20, 2011.
Susan Ellen Lanning, 70, passed unexpectedly on Thursday, April 7, 2011, after a brief illness. She has gone to join her beloved husband, George William Lanning Jr., who passed December 21, 1990. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Brown and son-in-law Fred Brown, and their children Griffin and Quintin Brown of Redwood Valley, CA; son, Thomas "Tal" Lanning and daughter-in-law Shelly Lanning, and their children Cash and Emily Lanning of Santa Rosa, CA. She was affectionately known as Gr Gr (Gurr Gurr) to her Great Grandson, Aiden Allen Brown. She is also survived by her 4 stepchildren, Michael Lanning of NY, George William Lanning III, Alice Parker, and Mary Bartlett who all reside in Southern CA. She had a total of 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Bill Posey of McAllen, TX. She resided in Ukiah for 30 yrs. From 7/02 -10/09 she cared for her Mother. Prayer was always very instrumental in her life. "Thy will be done" gave her the strength she needed. Prior to caring for her mother, she worked as a distributor with her husband George throughout Northern California, and continued after his passing. She provided local stores with goods from Fort Bragg to Lake County and even as far away as Crescent City. Her memories of the laughter that she and George shared over all those many years and miles together were recounted by her frequently and with much fondness. She always smiled when talk turned to George; he was the love of her life. She will be remembered for prefacing stories with "Let me tell you something without going into a lot of detail" and of course, there always followed lots and lots of details. She graduated from Texas Women's University with a degree in education, but was most proud of being a wife and mother. During the last 21 years, she loved spending time at Brown's Daycare with Rebecca and all of the children there. She will fondly be remembered as Grandma Susan to many children. Susan talked many times of wanting to travel when her time became her own. She soon came to realize; however, that what gave her the most joy besides her family, was spending time gardening in her yard. Her children will be having a celebration of her life on April 23rd at 2 pm at the home of her daughter, Rebecca Brown. They would be honored to have your presence at the celebration. For additional information call 707-485-2401. Arrangements are under the direction of the Eversole Mortuary.

Tal, Rebecca and families, Please accept my deepest sympathy on your mom Susan's passing. Although i didn't know Susan all that well, i did find her to be a very straight forward person who spoke her mind and i truely respected her for that. Every time i did see Susan she went out of her way to be polite and always wanted to talk. She had a very sweet way of making you feel special.I wish i would have allowed more of my time to be a part of your famlies. She will be truley missed. May God bless her and her family.

Susan Lanning was a JEWEL of a woman, caring for her aged mother, loving her beautiful children, and doing GOOD in this Dear World.
I am so very sorry she passed with still so much life to live.

How I miss our weekly chats!! You would start every conversation with “Have I called at a bad time?” I always enjoyed talking with you and hearing some of the same stories over and over and over again. :) I found myself this morning wanting to pick up the phone and call you because it had been a while since we've talked, but then I remembered…I couldn’t. We miss you more and more each day, but I know you are in a better place and are very happy because you are with your love, George. I love you very much and will never forget you!!

Susan....thank you for making me laugh! You were such a pleasure to be around. I have to say, you were an awesome mom and Tom & Rebecca are amazing proof of that. You will be missed at the Winters crab feed. However, we will make sure and eat some crab for you and make a toast to a wonderful lady. RIP

Susan (and through her, all of her family): After much reflection, I realize there are some thoughts I want to share now, before another moment passes. First, I wish I would have spent more time talking with you, and less time "chatting". I learned so much about you after you were gone - what an amazing life you lead - which was clearly reflected in the incredible, caring woman you were. Second, I should have thanked you for the grandmotherly love you always shared with my son, Matthew. He cherished you, and still cherishes your memory and those of the times you spent together. And, last but not least, thank you all the kindness you never failed to offer, in word and deed. Your legacy lives on in all of us!

Rebecca, Tal and family. I am so sorry for the loss of your mom. She was such a wonderful person. She will be miss by all. I don't remember ever seeing her without a smile and a great attitude. I also loved her laugh, it was one of a kind. I love you and keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Michael Lanning and his family have been friends for so long - and reading other condolences has prompted us to write our own message. We never knew her, but the fact that Susan cared for her mother for 7 years says a lot about her. Having 14 grandchildren is itself an accomplishment. She nurtured so many lives. From reading these memories she will probably be most remembered for cherishing her family. And her dedication to family stands out as a main priority, a value seemingly missing in the world today.

Susan, you were a wonderful mother, step-mother, grandmother, wife and friend. I treasure the summers I spent in Arizona as a teenager. I would spend hours talking to you about everything under the sun. I appreciated your special perspective on so many issues. I loved helping out with dinner and eating your delicious chocolate chip cookies. I have to confess that I would sneak some out of the coffee can on the top shelf when I would babysit
for Tal and Rebecca...sorry :) I always figured you knew anyway. It was such a joyful surprise to see you last year at Jim's birthday party. It made the event even that much more special. You will be missed by everyone who knew you. You were very special to me and influenced me in my formative years much more than you ever knew. I love you and will think of you always. Mary

Rebecca and Tal I want you to know how much your Mom meant to me. She was a wonderful Aunt and friend. I have wonderful memories of her and your Dad when they came to the warehouse each week. Even when time went by and I didn't see your mom for awhile we never had a hard time catching up. I loved her and will miss her. Thinking of you all at this sad time. I wish I could be with you on Saturday. I will be there in spirt. We will see you soon. Love you Connie

Rebecca and Tal, we all loved your mom more than you will ever know. She and your dad were two of the funniest people I have ever known. It meant so much to me to have her at my 60th birthday party. Talk about a surprise. Seeing your mom and having the opportunity to laugh and catch up was more that I could have ever wished for. We will be there to celebrate the life of this very special person. The Bartletts are invading from the south.

Rebecca and Tal, I'm so sorry for your loss. Your mother was a very special lady. I loved seeing her and your father when they would come visit us at work (Mickey D's). They were so funny, and also happy people. I love you guys and thinking of you lots.

Grandma Susan was a beautiful soul and she will be missed. I remember as a kid going with grandma to deliver products to grocery stores and I loved having the one on one time with her. I loved her very much...

Catching up with Mrs. Lanning in the grocery stores over the last few years has been a great highlight for me. I always looked up to her during high school and was anxious for her to know me as an adult because she was a big role model for me growing up. I will always value and respect the times I was in her presence. Rebecca and Tal, Thank you for sharing her so many years ago. I will be praying for you all. Thanks Mrs. Lanning for being like a second mother to me. I will miss our encounters at Lucky's.
