Susan McFarland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 11 to Aug. 20, 2023.
Susan Elizabeth McFarland, 60, passed away and went through the doggy door on August 8th, 2023. After spending the last 18 months living out her best mermaid life on the beach in Galveston, she spent her last week surrounded by family in the Austin area.

Susan was remarkably creative, intelligent, and wildly funny. She loved to create and voice characters for her children, and read to us using unique voices for characters in books. She got such joy out of regularly calling in to KLBJ FM in the 90s/00s as the iconic and unforgettable Lady Bird Johnson. Susan wore so many hats. She worked in ad sales in the late 80's for the San Marcos Daily Record, where she would use unsold space to publish notes to her daughter affectionately known as Scooter Patooter. She also worked in the publishing and distribution of Herb Clip for the American Botanical Council. After going back to school at 40, she worked as a SLAC chemistry tutor at Texas State University. Following graduation she became a chemistry teacher for Manor, Midland, and Hays school districts. Susan most recently used her creativity and unparalleled acting skills as a standardized patient at UTMB to help train new doctors.

Susan was preceded in death by Mr Rogers, Puppy, and Panda Waggy. She is survived by Nicholas Cage, Jack Black, Ian Moore, Spam Likely, Vanessa Bear, daughter Laura and James Foster, daughter Kelly Po McFarland, son Dylan Thomas Choo Choo Train Station McBryde, granddaughter Zoe Steffy, bowler Terry McFarland, walking partner Julie Oolie, bff Jeff McVey, and good boy Mr Jackie Doo.

The family is holding a private ceremony and asks that in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your local animal shelter or food bank, donating blood and/or platelets, registering to be an organ donor, donating your body to science after you pass, or reaching out to your local congressperson in favor of death with dignity laws. Mom's love for science and education lives on as she helps educate new medical professionals at UTSA. As Mr Rogers would put it, our mother was a helper, and helping others would be the best way to honor her memory.

Susan would like to encourage everyone to get regular cancer screenings and to follow your dreams, regardless of your age. She loved to taunt, "You won't!"

I sent Susan this last month. I'd like to share it here now:

Just wanted to write a little something to let you know I'm thinking of you sis, and hoping you are resting well. I think of you everytime I fill my Brita water dispenser with the glass pitcher you gave me. I think of you after a shower when I use the robe I got from you. I think of you when I look at my tv, because one bin below the tv holds the softest grey blanket I've ever felt, and the other holds my vibrating heating pad and the shoulder wrap. My kitchen pans, my sunglasses, my mirror hanging on my wall, so many gifts you've given me fill this place.

I was given such an amazing gift by getting to have you for an older sister. When I was young you represented hope- the idea that one day getting out was indeed possible. And you have treated me with nothing but kindness and generosity since then, as is truly your nature.

I'm so glad I moved to San Marcos and got to experience the river trips, the errand running, the many long walks and many long talks. And as much as I hated to lose that I'm so grateful that you were able to move to Galveston and realize your dream of beach living.

I sometimes hear that I remind people of a hippie, and I would credit that to you. Your easy going nature, your love of what is genuine and true, your way of giving so much of yourself are ideals I have emulated. Some of the very best parts of me I learned from you, and I'm so thankful for that.

I've thought of the story of Charlotte's Web lately. Charlotte had to leave Wilbur, but he was able to continue on without her because he had the friendship of her three children. I can't imagine how to continue well here after you have to leave, but your three children will always be my precious treasured friends. I will always be here for them, as I've promised them, but want to promise you as well.

What an amazingly strong, beautiful, kind soul you are. I don't believe your journey ends with this world- I believe so much beauty is ahead of you. There could be no paradise without you there, and I feel that's where you are heading. Our story together may get interrupted, but I'm certain it will continue on in time.

Thank you so much for every gift you've given me. The gift of your time, your humor, your heart, your empathy and your effort. Thank you for the blueprints you've given me for living a life with decency and appreciation. Thank you for being such an incredible older sister. I dreamt of knowing you when I was little- and you've certainly exceeded that dream.

I love you sis. I always will.
