I sent Susan this last month. I'd like to share it here now:
Just wanted to write a little something to let you know I'm thinking of you sis, and hoping you are resting well. I think of you everytime I fill my Brita water dispenser with the glass pitcher you gave me. I think of you after a shower when I use the robe I got from you. I think of you when I look at my tv, because one bin below the tv holds the softest grey blanket I've ever felt, and the other holds my vibrating heating pad and the shoulder wrap. My kitchen pans, my sunglasses, my mirror hanging on my wall, so many gifts you've given me fill this place.
I was given such an amazing gift by getting to have you for an older sister. When I was young you represented hope- the idea that one day getting out was indeed possible. And you have treated me with nothing but kindness and generosity since then, as is truly your nature.
I'm so glad I moved to San Marcos and got to experience the river trips, the errand running, the many long walks and many long talks. And as much as I hated to lose that I'm so grateful that you were able to move to Galveston and realize your dream of beach living.
I sometimes hear that I remind people of a hippie, and I would credit that to you. Your easy going nature, your love of what is genuine and true, your way of giving so much of yourself are ideals I have emulated. Some of the very best parts of me I learned from you, and I'm so thankful for that.
I've thought of the story of Charlotte's Web lately. Charlotte had to leave Wilbur, but he was able to continue on without her because he had the friendship of her three children. I can't imagine how to continue well here after you have to leave, but your three children will always be my precious treasured friends. I will always be here for them, as I've promised them, but want to promise you as well.
What an amazingly strong, beautiful, kind soul you are. I don't believe your journey ends with this world- I believe so much beauty is ahead of you. There could be no paradise without you there, and I feel that's where you are heading. Our story together may get interrupted, but I'm certain it will continue on in time.
Thank you so much for every gift you've given me. The gift of your time, your humor, your heart, your empathy and your effort. Thank you for the blueprints you've given me for living a life with decency and appreciation. Thank you for being such an incredible older sister. I dreamt of knowing you when I was little- and you've certainly exceeded that dream.
I love you sis. I always will.
