Susan M. Pierce (née McNutt), affectionately known as Sue, passed away on August 6, 2025, in
Bangor, Maine. Born on November 5, 1939, in Falmouth, Massachusetts, Susan lived a life marked by warmth, resilience, and a deep commitment to family and community.
Growing up on Cape Cod, Susan embraced the values of hard work and compassion from an early age. She excelled academically and earned a full scholarship to Cornell University, where she completed dual bachelor's degrees in just four years-an achievement that reflected both her intellect and determination.
After college, Susan met the love of her life, Donald F. Pierce, while he was stationed at Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod. Their marriage brought them to Maine, where they built a home filled with love and laughter. Together they raised two sons, Donald F. Pierce Jr. and Bill Pierce.
Susan's professional life was defined by her role as a dining service manager at the University of Maine. Her incredible people skills and infectious sense of humor made her not just a supervisor but a beloved figure among her colleagues. Those who worked with her often said she felt more like family than a boss-her laughter echoing through the kitchens as she uplifted everyone around her. She retired in 1995 after leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
In 1982, Susan faced the heartbreaking loss of her son Donny to childhood cancer. From this profound sorrow emerged one of her most compassionate endeavors: her involvement with The Compassionate Friends in Bangor, a support group for parents grieving the loss of children. Through this work, she offered solace and strength to others walking similar paths.
Retirement brought new adventures for Susan and Don. They embraced life fully-skiing at Sugarloaf, sailing along the coast of Maine, traveling in their fifth-wheel camper, and enjoying winters in Florida. A master quilter, Susan cultivated friendships through quilting circles in both Maine and Florida, sharing her artistry and joy with fellow enthusiasts.
Susan's passions extended beyond quilting to include horses, dogs, skiing, sailing, camping, and classical music. She was also a devoted member of the North Brewer Eddington United Methodist Church, where she found spiritual connection and community.
Above all else, Susan will be remembered for her radiant smile and unwavering positivity. Her light touched everyone she encountered-whether as a mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, coworker, or mentor.
She is lovingly remembered by her son Bill Pierce; daughter-in-law Norma Jean Pierce; daughter Mylinda Weber; brother Robert McNutt; sister-in-law Pat McNutt; grandchildren Emily Hayse, Natalie Setty, Joe Hayse, Ashley Savard, Billy Connell, Georgia Connell, and Colt Weber; as well as several great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband Donald F. Pierce and their son Donny Pierce.
May Susan's memory continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew her. Her smile lives on in every life she touched. A Memorial Gathering will be held on October 25, 2025, from 03:00 PM to 04:00 PM at North Brewer Cemetery 32 Day Rd
