Susan's last text to me on 8.23.17 said, "You have a great horse Wendee".
Susan welcomed us as trailer in guests a few times this summer while my arena was being repaired. When I rolled in July 20th, she greeted me and then said, "I hope you don't mind if we start a few minutes late...I dropped my hope stone onto a ledge in the porta-potty." You can picture the determined expression on Susan's face, and the sparkle in her eyes as she shrugged and laughed about hope tumbling into the toilet. In our horse world and out there in that other world too, it's not all about the goals or ribbons, but the responses to challenges, symbols we hold, our support network, and ultimately the lives we touch.
I listened to Susan's husband Kurt, sons Forrest and Preston, family, friends, and students talk about how Susan supported them. It was comforting to be together in her covered arena at Cadence Farms. So many people spoke, sharing their poignant and sometimes funny memories of Susan's sideways glance, witty quips, energy, and endless courage. Susan lived her dream and generously shared her gifts with others. I returned home to spoil my horses, sweep the barn, and massage leather balm into every piece of tack I own. Today I'm still in shock and feeling angry, yet know I'm not alone.

Susan was an awesome rider and had an incredible connection with her horses. She was a star in the dressage world and will be missed by so many. There is a little less sparkle and kindness in the world with Susan gone.
