Susan Ray Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 10, 2024.
Susan Antoniette "Toni" Ray, born as Judith Ann Collins, was born on May 4th, 1942.

She passed away peacefully in her Carmel Valley home on June 25, 2024. Susan was born in Oakland, Ca, and was adopted by Rear Admiral Clarence C Ray and Ruth E Ray MD in Jacksonville, FL. in 1944.

Ruth E Ray remarried Professor of Geology Howel Williams at UC Berkeley.

Susan was known as Susan Williams through high School. She graduated from Berkeley high school in 1960.

As a young teen she went to summer camp at Mountain Home Jr. Ranch outside of Calistoga. Her first foray into the work world was the following year at Mountain Home Ranch. She loved the ranch so much that she continued to visit multiple times a year thereafter, even after she moved to her Carmel Valley home in 1976 with her son, Jeffrey Ray.

Through the years Susan did many unique things. She trekked the Himalayas in 1984. She volunteered for the Monterey Horse show during the mid-eighties as the onsite EMT.

Fiercely independent, and a huge fan of car racing, she also worked with Hardees Indy race team in the late eighties.

Susan was associated with the Carmel Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

Susan inherited a successful commercial cleaning business, Cal-Tech in 1996 and she managed that business for 25 years until retirement.

She was incredibly dedicated to her employees, who she cared for deeply.

Susan is survived by her son, Jeffrey Ray, his wife Kathy Ray and their son, Collin Ray of Carmel. Her nieces, Marie Ray and Eleanor Ray Friele of Seattle, Washington.

She was preceded in death by her mother Ruth E Ray, Father Clarence C Ray , step-father Howel Williams, and her brother Daniel Ray.

Susan will be laid to rest with her mother Ruth E Ray at Sunset View Cemetery in El Cerrito, Ca.

No services are planned.

It was with a heavy heart to have heard the news of Toni´s passing. She was not only like a 2nd mom to me, but a great friend. So many memories to cherish, from riding my dirt bike in "the back forty" at the Brookdale house in Carmel Valley, to the houseboat, waterskiing and fishing trips with her dear friends at Lake Shasta. I appreciated her carrying on the legacy of my dad´s business, Cal-Tech. It was very important work. I even remember her driving the powder-puff class to dry-out the dirt track in my dad´s stock car at the Watsonville Speedway! There were some amazing gatherings for A.J. Watson´s IndyCar race team after their tour to Laguna Seca each year and would even fly a banner on the house, "Welcome Race Fans!" She will truly be missed.

I had the opportunity to meet Toni Ray, while growing up in Carmel Valley.
She was a very kind, smart and intelligent lady who always had a smile and kind words to share. She will be greatly missed.
Many thoughts, prayers and hugs to her family, son Jeff, daughter in law Cathy and grandson Colin. She will always be remembered by all who knew her.
God Bless.
Suzy Hill Linsky.

I always admired Auntie Toni for her fierce independence, and her devotion to my cousin Jeff. I loved her quirky style furnishing her house with rustic antiques that were fun and interesting rather than formal.
