Dear Mom, if I was speaking at your memorial these would have been my tear filled words.
No doubt when they handed out mom in laws, the heavens decided to give me the very best one in the world.
When it came to being a mother to your daughter, I truly believe the words Mama Bear first originated from the definition of what it Meant to be Susan. You were always fiercely protective and loyal to no end for your daughter. Even when Missy was wrong lol, Missy knew she still had you right there beside her. Even when some of us (including you lol ) would make a joke at Missy´s expense, you would still always say like clockwork, "We can´t pick on my baby girl".
When you gave me your blessing to marry your daughter, you did so with such delight, love and joy that I still feel it till this day. You gave me the honor of dancing with you at our wedding. You told me that I was meant to be with her daughter and that your only ask of me was that I make a sacred promise. That promise was I would always no matter how hard, no matter the cost, no matter the challenge, that I make sure your baby girl would always be taken care of till the very end.
No matter what we went through as a family, there was never a doubt that inside your heart, you always loved me. When our son Reagan was born, I was first out of the delivery room and to see you standing there with my mom and my brother as a first time Dad , meant the world to me. I know you saw the fear and worry in my eyes of now walking out as a father. You responded with giving me the very best of your legendary hugs and said that little baby boy is blessed to have me as a Dad and that you had no doubt I would be an Amazing Dad.
Many times when I face the struggles that come with being a parent, I think about you, your words and that amazing hug and I feel your encouragement and love.
When I think of you, the words "Bless you child always comes to my mind. Whenever I brought you a meal, a gift or whatever, you always lit up, smiled and made sure before even even saying thank you, the first words would always be "Bless you child".
You knew that spreading love and good will was a blessing that should always be bestowed upon others and you made sure that every time with your words that I knew you recognized that blessing.
You were an incredible and supportive Nana to Reagan. He truly won the lottery getting you to be his Nana . The number of soccer games you saw him play were countless. You were always so proud to see numerous successes on the pitch. You always took time to play various card and board games with him. You gave him your time and your best.
He felt your love and loved you. He felt it so much that he had to make sure he saw you hours before you died and tell you from his heart " Thank you for being my Nana, I will miss you and I will see you soon. I love you Nana."
On your death bed, hours before you made your ascent into Heaven I was blessed to be able to give you the final words I could ever look at you to say. While I struggled to find the words for such a sad moment, my mind went back to that wedding day dance and these words came out. Susan, thank you for loving me, for giving me your daughter, for being an incredible Nana to Reagan and I want you to know it´s ok for you to join your sweet Mom and Dad. It is ok cause I want you to know that you don´t have to worry about your baby girl anymore . I promise that your Baby girl will always be protected and taken care"
Susan, thank you for loving me as a son in law. You go rest, you enjoy your parents, watch Reagan´s soccer games, watch your daughter be like just you by being a fierce, loyal Momma Bear. Most of all know I will take your place and be that fierce, loyal advocate to Missy. I will support her endlessly to see that she is always treated fairly, justly, always honoring what you wanted and believed in and fulfilling my promise of making sure your baby girl is taken care of.
We will all miss our family trips to Huber. I will be thinking of you as I work the St.Joes Picnic. I will always cherish how much that picnic and your attendance meant to you.
Reagan says "Hi Nana and I love you."
I Love you Mom. See you soon and hoping you will have your famous potato salad with you. .
