Susan Rose Schoenberger Spencer M.D.

Dr. Susan Rose Schoenberger Spencer, 52, of Hollis, NH died peacefully at home from pancreatic cancer on August 9, 2007. Dr. Spencer was born in Montpelier, VT on January 12, 1955 and lived in Waterbury, VT until the age of 10 at which time her family moved to Amherst, MA where she attended the public schools and graduated from Amherst Regional High School in 1973. She received her B.A. from the University of Vermont in 1977. She married fellow UVM alumnus H. Todd Spencer in August 13, 1977 and worked as a research assistant at Dartmouth College until 1980 when she and her husband both went on to medical school, graduating from Boston University School of Medicine together in 1984. Susan completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Worcester Memorial Hospital, in Worcester, MA in 1987. She was Board Certified in Internal Medicine. Upon completion of her medical training, Dr. Spencer worked as a primary care physicians in Glens Falls, NY until 1991. At that time she joined the Hitchcock Clinic in Nashua, NH working in their Urgent Care Department. In 1993, she decided to focus on geriatric medicine, managing patients at the Greenbriar Nursing Home in Nashua. She became the Medical Director at Greenbriar in 1997 where she remained until disabled by her illness last month. Susan has been a resident of Hollis, NH for the past 16 years. She was a regular volunteer in the local school system and an active member of the Hollis Brookline High School Booster Club. A devoted mother, her greatest joy has been raising her family. She loved the outdoors, particularly hiking, canoeing, cross country skiing and camping with her family. She had been an avid gardener. She loved building and restoring stone walls. Dr. Spencer is survived by her beloved husband of 30 years, Haven Todd Spencer M.D., her children, Haven William Spencer, Katharine Grace Spencer and Jonathan Todd Spencer all at home; her parents, Henry B. Schoenberger of Laconia, NH and Katharine Hanneman Schoenberger of Greenfield, MA; her siblings, Barbara S. Killeen of Bernardston, MA and Peter W. Schoenberger of Hadley, MA; her mother in-law, Beryl W. Spencer of Woodstock, VT as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Her Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday August 14, 2007 at the Congregational Church of Hollis at 10:00AM.
