Susan served as the Instructional Consultant at Jones Elementary during my first few years as principal. She was a valued partner and a good friend as together we learned how to be school administrators. I will always remember her love of the children and staff at Jones. She was truly one in a million and will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her and working with her. May God bless John and all her family during this difficult time.

Mrs. Steffee was my principals at Owens at ES for two years. She supported her teachers and she constantly looked for ways to show her gratitude for the work her teachers did daily. Thank you Susan.

Susan you will always have a special place in our hearts. You hired both my wife Regina and I to teach at Owens. You were also our children's principal. (Jacob and Ashten) I remember my first interview with you when asked what I knew about the T.A.A.S. test. Transferring from Louisiana, I had not heard anything about it and did not have a great answer. Somehow, you saw some potential in me in spite of my limited knowledge of the Texas Accountability System. That was 28 years ago and since then, as a principal now, I have interviewed hundreds of teacher applicants and asked similar questions. Thank you Susan for believing in me. Thank you also for giving my wife Regina a chance to teach at our wonderful neighborhood school that we call Owens. You instilled in us a life long pride during those years and we have faithfully served in T.I.S.D. ever since. Thank you for also supporting our family. The first time you met Regina was when we set the alarm off the summer before I started teaching at Owens. An officer was pointing a gun at both of us for entering the door of the hallway at Owens. Regina was 8 months pregnant at the time with our first born child Jacob. You had to come and turn the alarm off on a weekend. You were always so pleasant even in situations like this one. Our prayers go out to your family during this time. We will never forget the impact you made on us and on our community. See you one day soon! Claude and Regina Lane

I was one of the lucky teachers to work for Susan Steffee at Owens Elementary. She truly cared for each of us and set an amazing example to us of true class and professionalism. She went above and beyond to motivate us and the children!! I will never forget the times when she kissed a pig and took a hot air balloon ride just to challenge us to get great test scores!! My heart goes out to her wonderful family and please take comfort knowing that she touched so many people!

Susan was a very special person. We attended Lee together, where she was on the drill team. Her laughter and ways pf amusing others will always be remembered. As an educator , I knew of her leadership bot at Rice and Owens. She was loved and will be dearly missed by all of the class of'64. May God's grace be with John and the rest of the Steffee family and friends

I will always remember how Susan Steffee always made room in her house for me. Kimberly and I were friends in Intermediate school and I spent countless sleepovers at their house. She was so welcoming, took us to the skating rink endlessly and always made breakfast the next morning. She included me on family vacations to a dude ranch in Bandera and was always so sweet and kind to me. I was so sad to hear this news and I want the whole Steffee family to know how important they were to me and my family during those years. At the time all I knew is she worked at a school and I had no idea she was such an influential principal. All I knew is she made me feel special and welcome and now as a mom I realize that is a huge job.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Steffee family. Susan was such an inspiration to our kids and grandkids at West Houston Church of Christ. Our kids are the Turneys. They loved her dearly and the times Kim shared with her at preschool were and will always be precious. She will always be a cherished, Christian woman to Kim. May God bless your sweet family. Sincerely, Doug and Ann Crockett (Kims parents)

Susan was such a wonderful person in all ways. Michelle I remember everything about your first grade year in Whitehouse ISD. You were so smart and made the highest score on the achievement test for all of first grade. Your sweet mother never made me feel like a first year teacher and was always so kind to me. My boys attended Owens school and again she was such a wonderful blessing to our family with her leadership at Owens. Prayers lifted for you and yours at this time.
Love,

When Susan came to Owens I wondered how she would be able to "fill" the shoes of Betty Cox.
Susan made her on legacy at Owens!! She was supportive to all her staff and loved us and the kids. Susan gave me her "approval' to pull my pranks and just be myself at Owens. I loved sitting in her office and just laughing or being able to discuss problems in the classroom or about my own kids. Susan was one of a kind and will be missed.
Until we see each other again!!
Love you, Susan,

My heart breaks for the entire Steffee family. Hold on tightly to the wonderful memories you have...they will sustain you through this almost unbearable loss. We send our love and prayers from Tyler. Im sure that Susan and my mom are both having coffee with Elvis right about now...I know they are laughing together and that makes me smile. Love you all...

Susan was my first principal when I began working for the district in 1998. What a blessing to be given Owens
Elementary under the leadership of Susan and her sidekick, Debbie Marshall. I was not a teacher, but the school nurse. Susan was the epitome of a professional. Yet, it was easy to see the joy she got from her students and her staff. She would look toward my clinic with a sideways glance and made it known that she wanted no part in "your Job"...."but if you need me, you know where I am!" How true those words were. Her support she showed me professionally and personally made a lasting impression on me. She set the bar high and few came close to her standard. Thank you Susan for the example you gave me not only as a dedicated educator, but that of a Christian. I will miss her. Rhonda Reagan
