New, York, NY - Susanne "Susi" Deutsch Ellis passed away peacefully at home on July 10, 2024. She was 93.

Susanne was born to Helmuth and Hildegard (nee Meier) Deutsch on January 6, 1931, in Breslau, Germany. Susanne, with her mother and twin sister, Ruth, left Germany in 1940, for Shanghai, China, where they would spend the next 7 years. They immigrated to the United States in 1947 and found their way to New York City. It was there that Susanne became a U.S. citizen and proud New Yorker.

Susanne graduated from New York's Hunter College and received her master's degree in mathematics from New York University. It was as a lab assistant at Columbia University that she met Reed "Hoby" Ellis Jr. They were married in 1959 and worked together at the American Institute of Physics for many years. In her later years, Susanne worked and volunteered for the Lincoln Center, where she was able to enjoy her lifelong love of music theory and opera.

Susanne is pre-deceased by her father, mother, sister, and husband. Her ashes will be laid to rest, as were those of her mother and sister, at a private ceremony in Germany.

Susanne was my second employer. I met her when I was 23 years old in the late 1970s. She helped instill a pride in hard work and discipline in me. I will remember her infectious laugh and love of opera.

Susanne was always very kind to my husband Daniel and me when we lived in New York City in the 1980's. She shared her love of opera with us, treating us to our first opera ever at the Met: Tales of Hoffman. She was a very good friend to my parents for many years. May her memory be a blessing.

I am forever thankful for how Susanne instilled great work ethics as she supervised me at The American Institute of Physics for nine years. For well over 40 years, I always looked forward to receiving a birthday card from her which included her yearly updates. My condolences to the family.
