Suzanne Dworsky ( Werber) Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 30, 2026.
Cambridge - Suzanne Elaine Dworsky (née Werber) passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of eighty-six at her summer home on Martha's Vineyard on August 22 2025. She is remembered by her older sister, Nancy; her two stepchildren, Arianne and Jeff; as well as her five grandchildren, Isaac, Zephyr, Imran, Cyrus and Rayhannah; and her six great-grandchildren, Selah, Goldie, Calder, Rhodes, Moses and Zelda.

Suzanne was born on March 2, 1938, in Staten Island, New York, to Albert Herman Werber, an electrical engineer, and Katherine Estelle Werber, a bookkeeper. Following her birth, the family relocated to Westfield, New Jersey, where she and Nancy were raised and educated in the Westfield public school system. Suzanne was an active community member and innately gifted student. In high school she served as a cheerleader and participated in numerous clubs and committees-early instances of her enduring commitment to community engagement.

Suzanne went on to attend Pembroke College, majoring in American Civilization where she would cultivate her lifelong interest in history, politics, and conservation. Suzanne was even accused of plagiarizing her first essay assignment because it was so well-written. As an undergraduate, she was revered by her peers for her self-determined intellectual curiosity-- she subscribed to The New York Times before it was customary to do so.

After graduating, Suzanne began her career in finance as a broker at Merrill Lynch in a professional field largely dominated by men. As the firm's only female broker, she gracefully endured overt gender discrimination, including various restrictions like those requiring she use the service elevator. She later joined Putnam Management Company, performing rigorous, manual statistical analyses of the bond market years before such work was computerized.

Suzanne met her husband, an analyst, Alan Dworsky, while working at Putnam. They went on to open their own management firm, Mount Auburn, achieving notable success in the field. In addition to their work together, they shared a life marked by travel, art, music, family, philanthropy and a deep appreciation of nature. Though they traveled extensively -it was their time spent at their summer house on Martha's Vineyard that held the most significant meaning for them. There they sailed, visited beloved beaches, shopped for fresh fish in Menemsha, and collected natural treasures-birds' nests, fossils, whale bones, dried flora and distinctive shells that would come to decorate their house. Suzanne took great pride in her summer vegetable and flower gardens, even if her fruit trees never quite flourished in the way she hoped.

With an appreciation for environmentalism, Suzanne delighted in details of the natural world and maintained a special fondness for objects echoing organic forms, particularly vegetables. Her households reflected this playful sensibility with eggplant-shaped vases, garlic-clove timers, beaded candy bars, and whisks resembling squids.

Suzanne was an excellent, albeit self-taught, cook and baker, very much influenced by Julia Childs. Her family will miss her Christmas roast beef, Basler Brunsli cookies and her Sunday tradition of David Eyre pancakes-always topped with lemon zest and Smucker's apricot jam.

A private person by nature, Suzanne nevertheless maintained deep and enduring friendships. She was a devoted member of a close group of Pembroke classmates who met regularly for vacations together-first annually in the summers with families, and later for long weekends. She also practiced Tai Chi for many years, and was widely admired for her vitality, competence, thoroughness and quiet discipline.

Suzanne Dworsky was a highly accomplished woman whose life was marked by composure, independence, and an appreciation for beauty of all forms. She will be remembered with love and admiration.

Having a 68 year friendship with Suzy reminds me of all her wonderful qualities. We met as teenagers, assigned as Pembroke roommates at Sharpe House in the fall of 1956. Each year on March 2 I think of her, as our birthdays were 1 month apart. I feel great thankfulness that our lives came together and we stayed in touch over decades..what a treasure!

My condolences to Suzanne Dworsky's family.

As a 25-year veteran of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, I want to express my gratitude for the amazing support that she and Alan gave to the Boston Symphony's choral programming, making it possible for the late John Oliver to enjoy the security of an endowed position during the final years of his time leading the TFC and allowing expanded offerings and opportunities for hundreds of singers and thousands of audience members.

Whenever my spouse and I go walking in Mt Auburn Cemetery, we will stop by Alan and Suzanne's site there - a beautiful, poetic sculpture that expresses their amazing bond - and think of their kindness. Theirs were lives well lived!
