Hard to believe it has been 8 years, pleasecheck and see what you think
My last visit with pujya swamiji was in the hospital just few days before he was flown to India.
When I entered the room, it was all needles, machines and monitors.
He could hardly open his eyes.
When I put my hand on his hand, he asked in Tamil, "who is it", and I replied, "Surya swamiji",
His response by repeating my name couple of times, he said " amalapuram Surya?
I replied , yes swamiji.
Next comes the most shocking, compassionate swamiji, summing up over 4 decades of my life in telugu, of all the things I have been through, telling me , "remember, you did good amma, you worked very hard, you helped the family. Including couple of specific situations.
Don´t worry, you will be fine
All in Telugu, the couple of people in the room had no idea what was being told, it was very hard to keep the tears off.
And my old friend and guru bhai Tom was in the room trying not to tear up.
That was our beloved swamiji, always caring, helping. Real Daya.
As one of brilliant scholar and Sahasra Avadhani dr. Garirikipati Narasimha Rao in Andhra in an introduction, referred to swamiji in the most fitting manner as Maharishi Dayananda Saraswathi
That is our beloved Maharishi Swami Dayananda Saraswathi

praNaams dear Swamiji, it has been five years since you left your mortal body, what was uncontrollable grief at losing you due to my own attachment and transference, has now miraculously transformed into happy acceptance, as also the knowledge that you are within each one of us who remembers you, all thanks to your teachings, the manner in which you unfolded various texts of shaastra, vedaanta, upaniShads....how you exemplified what you taught..how you lived the very life that you showed us was possible, in the here and now..all that is here is your legacy....thank you does not suffice...mere trivial words...what is indebted to a guru can never be paid back...would I even dare!! let me be an instrument of dharma, let me recognize the truth of myself and abide in it, and in that niShTha, I shall meet you soon, with love and Om!

Continuing this study of the self, with the copious teachings Swamiji has left behind for all -- in audio, books, and in so many formats -- this student realizes what a blessing it's been to have been formally initiated to brahmavidya, the knowledge of the self, in its true purport by Swami Dayananda Saraswati.
One gains clarity progressively on listening to the unfoldment of that purport as intended for centuries if not millennia. The clarity, precision in use of words, accuracy in translation, humor to engage the hearer, and above all the simplicity in the spoken language yet 'air-tight' in definition, all allow one to see for oneself that which is to be understood.
Yet, it is the compassion as a human being that surfaces every time one recalls an(y) interaction. In his own words, they all define what grace is. Indeed fortunate to have known and studied (and continue to) under such a renowned teacher and person. Om.

Swamiji's message was the ancient wisdom of the Vedic rishis: You, the self, are the whole. Yet, you feel small, limited, only because you do not know the reality of yourself, of who you really are. So you need self-knowledge to remove this self-ignorance. For which you need a teacher who knows the texts and who can use the words deftly, like a master artist. All religions tell that Isvara is the nimitta karana (intelligent cause). But only Hinduism tells that Isvara is not only the nimitta karana but also upadana karana (material cause). When we understand that Isvara is both the intelligent cause and the material cause of this universe, then ALL THAT IS HERE IS ISVARA. He also explained that physical order, psychological order and any other order we see in the universe is Isvara's order. When we understand this great order, then there is no reason for complaint.

When speaking about death he once chanted:
Om Puurnnam-Adah Puurnnam-Idam Puurnnaat-Purnnam-Udacyate

Om Shaantih Shaantih Shaantih

Pujya Swamiji,
You are the one who reminded why mother, father and GURU is devobhavah!
You made us understand the need of a reference other than our own senses. And also taught why Vedanta alone is that reference.
And through out the dialogue you have been an ocean of compassion and shown our point of fallacy of our notion. Until the Gjnanam was Sidham!
I do not know what and how I can give my Guru Dakshina, for making my self see what I am.
For me you are none other than Sri Adi Sankara himself.

My beloved swami Dayananda
He has been the very modern day Lord Krishna imparting Gita for all those who sought.
He has been the Sankara to unfold the shastra of upanishads and bhashya.
He taught us how to apply the teachings in our daily lives.
I have been blessed to have known the for almost four decades.
He has been not only been my Guru, he has been lot more.
Consoled me like a mother,
Advised me like a father,
He has been my best friend
and my best confidant.
Not to speak of the most compassionate counselor.
Though he is no more, i feel he is part me and he is in my DNA.
If I could live even a fraction of what he represented , that would be my greatest thing.

Swami Dayananda Saraswati, a great Hindu Saint passes away
Author: Somdat Mahabir
Source: Guyana Times, September 27, 2015
Swami Dayananda Saraswati, a great Hindu Saint, Sanskrit scholar and well-known expert of Vedanta passed away in Rishikesh, Bharat (India) on Wednesday night. He was given bhusamadhi (a reserved form of burial for Swami jis) in a sitting position at a spot facing the Ganga Mai (river) at his ashram at Rishikesh, near the said river. The final rites for the revered Swamiji was done on Friday morning amid sacred chanting of mantras from the Vedas and Upanishads. Thousands of people, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Saints, dignitaries, and ordinary folks across the world, offered rich tributes to the life of Pujya Shri Swami DayanandaSaraswatiji, as he was popularly called.
Swami ji was 85 years old and has left a worldwide following of students. He was a great master of Sanskrit texts, lucidly explaining them, and utilized modern scientific principles to illustrate his message of Vedanta during his teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads. Swami Dayananda's commentary on the Bhagavad Gita (Hinduism's Upaveda or highest Veda) is highly rated and serious students of the Gita study it on par with commentaries of Adi Shankara, Ramanuja, Madhva, Nimbarka, Madhusudana Saraswati, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Dnyaneshwar, Raghavendra Tirtha, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Mahatma Gandhi, Sri Aurobindo, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Swami Prabhupada and Swami Chinmayananda.
Swami Dayananda was the spiritual Guru of India's Prime MinisterModi. The Swami has left behind several highly trained disciples and his academic, advocacy, and humanitarian work will surely continue.
He was very articulate in English language and was not shy to take on issues facing the Hindu society. He was also a prolific writer. He was a stern opponent of conversion, a proponent of social justice, and a key speaker at national and international Hindu events, including those organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), the largest Hindu organisation in the world.
I was honored to personally listen to discourses given by Swami Dayanandaji and met him in New York in August 2000 at the Dharma Ganga, organised by the VHP, and done in conjunction with the United Nations Millennium Peace Summit. Swami Dayananda along with the indomitable Shri Ashok Singhal, played major roles at the summit. 108 highly respectable Swami jis, including our own Pujya Swami Aksharananda, was a delegate.
I remember a round-table discussion at the event in which Swami Dayananda and Swami Aksharananda drew major applause for their strong and lucid articulation. At the said event, I was introduced by Swami Aksharananda to Shri NarendraModi who at the time, was an ordinary volunteer of the Sangh.
I believe that after the UN Millennium Peace Summit meeting, Guyana's illustrious Swami Aksharananda developed a special respect for Swami Dayananda and visited him both in America and India and also brought him to Guyana on a special visit. My understanding is that Swami Dayananda Saraswati was particularly interested in the growth of Saraswati Vidya Niketan (SVN) founded by Swami Aksharananda and sent a Sanskrit teacher to the SVN high school.

Swami Dayanada had an amazing knack for making the insightful analysis and irrefutable logic of time tested ancient wise texts accessible in a clear straightforward manner to any of us making an inquiry.

After the Sunday class, out of many things, "Pray to" Pujya Swamiji stuck with me thru out the day so strongly that every thought somehow was related to Swamiji. The beauty of this culmination was when I was observing the lunar eclipse in the night with some Japam, when the moon was fully covered with a beautiful silver lining in the periphery, a vivid image of Pujya Swamiji inside the silver lining appeared for me. Pujya Swamiji is not available for vyavahara as Swamanithan mama mentioned but His knowledge and his face as a symbol of knowledge is available when one is immersed in his teachings..
(Apologies if I misstated anything, just wanted to express my experience past Sunday night)
