SHAPIRO, Sydney. Peacefully, in his seventy-eighth year, surrounded by his family on Friday, September 19, 2003 after a courageous and valiant struggle. Beloved husband of Merle Wolofsky (Frankel) and the late Gloria Solomon (Ashpitz). Revered father and kindred soul of son Ronnie, his daughter-in-law Debbie (Abracen) and treasured Zaidie of Adam and Michelle. Loved and respected as a father by Jeff and Rusty Ashpitz, Brenda and Frank Weinstein. Cherished Zaidie of Madison and Morgan Ashpitz and Harrison Weinstein. He is also survived by his daughters Marilyn (David Katz) and Sue-Zyn (David Kronick) and their children Michael and Lauren; Jeremy and Ilana. Dearly loved brother and brother-in-law of of Len and Faigel Shapiro of Calgary, and uncle of Robin and David Murphy, Beth and Larry Hirsh, and Saundra Shapiro. Special great uncle to Jessica and Victoria; Jared, Noah and Aaron; and Erica. Merle's children Jonathan and Donna, Daniel and Judy, Peter and Shanah Frankel and their families have grown to admire, respect and deeply appreciate this very special man. Special thanks to Doctor Harvey Kreisman and the entire Pulmonary Oncology team at The Jewish General Hospital and Doctor Michael Dworkind, Director of Palliative Care Services, for their dedicated and compassionate care. Funeral services from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean-Talon West on Sunday, September 21 at 2:30 p.m. Burial at the Shomrim Laboker Congregation Cemetery, Beth Yehuda Section, De La Savane. Shiva at 5150 Macdonald #1402. Due to the advent of Rosh Hashanah, shiva ends Friday morning. In lieu of gifts or flowers, contributions may be made to the "Sydney Shapiro Memorial Fund" for Pulmonary Oncology c/o Jewish General Hospital Foundation, (514) 340-8251
