Mrs. Sylvia Smith Hurst, age 82, entered into rest on Sunday, June 25, 2023 at her home. Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at Friendship United Methodist Church by Pastor Charles Teal and Brent Taylor with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends from 2:00 – 3:00 PM Tuesday, prior to the service at the church.
Mrs. Hurst was born June 5, 1941 in Chesterfield County, SC a daughter of the late James “Jim” Kirby and Ella Maude Freeman Smith. She was a retired cafeteria manager with Chesterfield – Ruby Middle School and a former employee of Chesterfield Manufacturing. A faithful member of Friendship United Methodist Church, Sylvia served as former treasurer and in various other capacities throughout the years. One of her favorite pastimes was going for a ride with her husband through the countryside and eating at their favorite restaurants. In earlier years, she enjoyed camping with her family, traveling to the beach, and shopping.
Mrs. Hurst was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by her brothers, Bill, Jack, Rex, Glenn, and Garland Smith; sisters, Lois Parks, and Carolyn Coley; and her sons, Jeffrey Neil Hurst, and Ernest Dale Hurst.
Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Eugene Hurst of the home; daughter, Dawn (Robbie) Funderburk of Ruby, SC; son, Leslie (Gail) Hurst of Chesterfield, SC; grandson, Cody Funderburk of Ruby, SC; grandchildren of the heart, Katherine Phillips and McKenzie Oliver and numerous nieces and nephews.
