Sylvia STEWART Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 7, 2017.
STEWART, Sylvia

It is with a heavy heart and hand that I have to put these words into print. Sylvia Marie Stewart (nee Gieg), January 18, 1943 - September 18, 2017, has passed away after a long battle with lupus and cancer. Leaving her loving husband Colin just one month shy of their 56th anniversary, Sylvia was predeceased by her father William Gieg and is survived by her mother Kae Gieg-Hittle; daughters Tracy and Sheila (Al); granddaughters Kiaya (Eric) and Dakota; great-grandsons Jackson and Jameson; brothers Bob (Elaine) and Doug (Maureen); as well as sisters and brothers-in-law Barb, George (Gloria), Bonnie, Donnie (Bonnie); and many, many nieces and nephews.
Sylvia was born in Calgary, raised in Edmonton where she graduated from Victoria Composite High School with dreams of becoming a lab technician. Soon after high school, she met Colin and her whole world changed. They married and moved to Victoria where Colin was learning "There's No Life Like It" in the Royal Canadian Navy and she, in turn, learned the real life version of "There's No Wife Like It". Through their years together Col and Syl raised their family wherever they were posted, including Victoria, Aldergrove, Dartmouth, back to Victoria, and finally settling in Abbotsford, BC.
Syl was the backbone of the family with her quiet, sweet, somewhat stoic nature. Never one to complain she used her sensible and frugal mindset to provide her family everything they needed and a few things just for fun. She loved to sing, dance, play the organ and putter in her garden. She was an avid participant in dog agility for many years with her sidekick Scamper. A sports nut and lover of words, puzzles and a proud season ticket holder of the Abbotsford Heat. Never shy about taking the last piece of pie and you knew you were in trouble when her slipper's trajectory came your way or she called you by the dogs' name. Syl was a sassy, outspoken lady with a style all her own. Born on the 18th, married on the 18th at the age of 18 and passed away on the 18th.

Neil and I send our deepest heartfelt condolences to you and your family Colin. As we think back to our sports involvement Sylvia and you are foremost in our minds. You both gave us pillars of support and encouragement during our fast-pitch softball days. With continued sport involvement may Sylvia be by your side as you carry on.
