Sylvia Ward Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 13, 2025.
Sylvia Maud Ward passed away November 13, 2025.She was born in in Passaic, NJ on May 25,1938 to Harry Otto Ward and Taimi Karlsson Ward. Sylvia grew up in New Jersey, British Columbia, and New York. She began her airline career with American Airlines in 1959 in Manhattan, continuing on with Mohawk Airlines and several mergers thereafter. She retired in 2001.

Sylvia described herself as a "dyed in the wool feminist" and was a fierce environmentalist. She played several leading roles in local theatre, was a talented classical pianist, and had a gift for creating beautiful gardens and landscapes. She loved sailing, music, art, was a voracious reader, loved her cats and dogs, and absolutely adored her barn swallows. Sylvia was a lifelong traveler, having been to 48 states, all throughout the Caribbean, as well as many countries in Europe.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Foote, her sister Cecilia Ward, her former husband Roderick Foote and his wife Janet who remained part of her family, along with a cherished sister in law, many loved nieces and nephews, and friends that she adored.

Special thanks to Tidewell Hospice of Lakewood Ranch, and the many wonderful caregivers of the last weeks who were, like most who met her, captivated by Sylvia's charm.

As a fierce supporter of homeless animals, a donation in her memory may be made to the Humane Society of Rome, NY on their website or by telephone.

Sylvia was in the play "Bad Seed" with me, Maria Curley, and did a spectacular acting job as the mother of her lost child -sensitive, loving, lost in her grief. I have a photo of Sylvia in that role in my dining room. What a loss to all who knew her. To her dear daughter, Sandy, and family, Rod and Janet, my condolences. Rest In Peace, Sylvia.

So very sorry to hear of Sylvia´s passing. She was my neighbor here in Bradenton once and we spent many a day hanging out front between our houses gabbing about the latest happenings of the day. Her dry spunky humor perpetually got us through our work outs at our evening physical therapy sessions and weekly exercise classes. An inveterate animal lover, she could be counted on to answer any questions about our pets. My condolences to her daughter, Sandy, who was truly the joy of her life

My thoughts have always been with you both. I was just a young teenager when I moved next to you. You both have made such a huge impact on my life. Thank you for always taking the time to show me how to maneuver through the world( even when it's not pleasant). Sandra, may you hold your memories close, your momma loved you immensely.

Sylvia and I didn't know each other very long, but we had a good time sharing stories. Having a great love for animals and coming down from the north was how we connected. Sylvia's to me seemed always determined to not let anything hold her back and stiffle her independence. I will miss our little chats.

So many memories of Sylvia beginning from the day we met and to think it´s been almost 50 years. My heart hurts with you friend. A loss so deep takes time but you´re never alone. Look all around and even inside and you´ll be reminded of beautiful mama. Love you always and I´m so very sorry.
