Tara Vangury Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 15, 2025.
Mrs. Tara Rao Vangury was born in Anakapalli, India in March 1940. She was a brilliant student who earned her Masters degree in Chemistry at the age of 20. She married our dad Dr. V Chalapati Rao and continued to work as a college professor.

Our family initially came to the US in 1966 when our father was selected as a Fulbright Scholar. After a few years, they returned to Nagpur, India where our dad further pursued his research interests at NEERI. In 1980, our family made the permanent move to the US, where our mom worked alongside our father in the Virology department at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. With our father's unexpected passing in 1986, our 46-year-old mom was suddenly left with the tremendous responsibility of raising four daughters, by herself as a young widow, as she courageously chose to remain in the US for our education.

Over the years, our mom passionately nurtured a large variety of interests, many of which were atypical for someone of her background. She was an incredible cook and loved tending to her garden, which in any given year contained 50-70 plants. She taught herself how to organically fertilize them in order to harvest rare fruits like sitafal, and her beloved Brahmakamalam flower. Soon after our father's passing, our mom self-initiated a lifelong interest in the stock market, and fervently dove into her new fast-paced world of daily trades. Her mornings began diligently with her garden & CNBC! She was also a longtime sports fan. She loved to watch NFL games, has attended countless Houston Rockets games since the 1980s, and has also enjoyed many Houston Astros games including a World Series game! Her love of traveling took her throughout the world ~ though we must of course make special mentions of Las Vegas and Coushatta!

Above all else, she was happiest when surrounded by her family. Her daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren were her pride and joy, and her love for us was boundless. She loved to cook and generously share each of her garden harvests with us. She taught us strength by example, grace through kindness and forgiveness, and courage by the way she faced life's hardest battles with determination and optimism. She loved selflessly, devotedly, and unconditionally as a daughter, sister, wife, mother and ammamma. We will miss her laughter, her wisdom, and her amazing life stories; but most of all, we will miss the way she made each of us feel so very deeply and unconditionally loved.

She is survived by her four daughters Nagasri, Anuradha, Sujatha, Hema; three sons-in-law Ryan, William and Jeff; six grandchildren Tara (and husband Mark), David (and wife Kaylee), Preston (and wife Mary), Christopher, Serena, and Alyssa. Our mom now joins her husband Dr. V Chalapati Rao, her parents Sri Mamidanna Kondala Rao and Srimati Bangaramma, and many other loved ones in eternal peace. Her extraordinary spirit lives on in the gardens she has planted, the journeys she has inspired, and her family whom she cherished and loved with the purest of hearts.

We would like to extend our deepest and most sincere appreciation for all the love, support and care shown to our most precious mom and our entire family through the years. We are forever thankful to her siblings for their daily calls with her; in addition to the countless notes, cards, calls, and messages of love

from family and friends throughout the world.

In her honor, please consider planting some beautiful flowers, or try your hand

at nurturing a new fruit or vegetable tree. Donations can also be made to St Jude Children's Research Hospital in her memory.

Dear Tara Dodamma

Anu, Shreyas, Tarun and I fondly remember your visit to Dallas in 2009 as we let the hurricane thankfully pass away from Houston.

In those three days, got to know your caring selfless nature better and it was also inspirational to know how you are able to keep smiling under adverse circumstances.

Rest in peace,
Anu and Ramesh

We are so sorry to hear about amma´s passing. Both your parents were instrumental in helping us acclimate to a new culture in the US as we stepped foot in Houston. They introduced us to the Indian community and helped transport us to weekend events and more. Your mother used to call my parents till before they left Austin. We are sorry that she went through so much pain in her recent years. She was one lucky mother to have 4 gems for daughters and their families who cared for her so dearly. Time in its flight drops some fine feathers. She was certainly one. She will be sorely missed, although now in a better place. May her soul rest in peace. Will try and call you soon. Love to you all. Take good care.

Dear Nagu Anu Suji Hema
I just have only one thing to say. To lead a Good Life you need to be good human being. Tara Attaya has stood tall on that line. No doubt on that. She lived her life to the best for all of us. What i can say all if you have acknowledged the sacrifice that she has done for all.
I still remember when I came to Houston in 2000 I told her that I had a meal in all the aunt´s houses except yours and i came today all the way from India to have a dinner with you. I was truly blessed and see all of you.
I am sure in the eyes of Attaya you have earned what all she has done for you all. Right now both of them would be showering their blessings from heaven to all of you.
Next year my trip is due to Dallas with my wife and daughter .
I would certainly come and meet you personally .
Pleas do keep posting of all your progress that will keep the connect alive.
I can only say Attaya you lived life to ur fullest

Regards
Sairam

I just wanted to tell all of you how much amul, anuj and I love you guys and your mom.

Anuj was saying the only reason he would go to Indian parties was because Tara aunty was there so he could talk sports with her.

Tara aunty was the coolest auntie we knew and our favorite. We loved hanging out at your house growing up.

My hope is that we continue to keep in touch, I know your mom
Would have loved that.

We love you sooo much and the way you cared for Tara auntie is inspiring for us three.

She´s in a better place and will always be looking down at us -

I was thinking I need to start watching CNBC so I can figure out how to play the market or the slots. Either way!

Love you

Feeling bad that I and Girija are not there at this critical time. I vividly remember the time when Chalapathi Rao garu passed away when we were there as a family. But then, Apurva, Richard and Anuj are there for you.

Dear Nagu, Anu, Suji and Hema, I´m SOOO very sorry for your loss. My deepest condolences to you all. Tara auntie was absolutely one of my favorite people - always so kind, decent, thoughtful, and compassionate (as are her daughters). She was like a second mother to me and I am heartbroken by this news. I may not be able to make it back to Houston on Sat but will try. (And if I don´t, will seek you out next time I´m there.)

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. May she rest in peace.

I am also deeply saddened by her passing but grateful for the incredible full life she lived. Her resilience, strength to fight back, contagious laughter, unbridled enthusiasm, kindness, and love for cooking, K. vishwanath´ songs, travel, and sports inspired Anu, Shreyas, Tarun and me.

I´ll miss her boundless and the stories she shared with my mom and also with us.Her love for gardening ( "talking to her plants"), her adventurous spirit at places like the Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, and her warm presence at family gatherings will stay with all of us.Rest in peace and please continue to shower us with your blessings.
