Tashema Racquel Chester Johnson was born on December 2, 1978, in Hartford, Connecticut. She passed away on October 7, 2024, in her home with her daughter and family by her side. A spirited soul known for betting on herself, Tashema was the true embodiment of what can be achieved when hard work is guided by strong faith.
Raised in Connecticut, she relocated to Columbus, Georgia, in 1995 and graduated from Carver High School in 1996. Tashema began a career in technology when she joined AFLAC as a programmer in 1998. She later joined TSYS Merchant Payment Solutions in 2000, where she remained until 2009, rising to the position of Senior Programmer Analyst. During this time, Tashema fought and won her initial battle with breast cancer and pursued her passion for cosmetology; a passion that began at a very young age. She completed her cosmetology studies in 2008 and opened Purpose and Passion Hair Salon in 2009. The salon, located in Columbus, GA, specialized in wigs for breast cancer warriors. It served as a labor of love driven by her purpose and deeply rooted passion that was reignited after her battle with the disease. Purpose and Passion also offered an array of other hair services and also included a fashion boutique. It earned Tashema CNN Money's recognition as one of the top 10 entrepreneurs in Columbus, GA in 2015. Tashema was ambitious and accomplished.
Tashema was not only a successful entrepreneur; she became a realtor in 2014, helping clients find their dream homes. While working at Century 21 Premier Real Estate in Columbus, GA, Tashema received the Million Dollar Club award in 2021. She also managed the strategic direction of her late husband James "J.B." Johnson's many businesses, Supershop Entertainment and Love at First Bite, to name a few. Supershop Entertainment, under Tashema and her loving husband's leadership, brought Grammy-winning artists and other acts to the Columbus area, enriching the community's cultural scene.
JB, as he was affectionally called, passed away on February 19, 2016.
Continuing her husband's legacy, Tashema founded JBelieves In You-a non-profit aimed at empowering young men in the community through academic enrichment and personal empowerment.
Tashema graduated cum laude from Columbus State University with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, in May 2023. Most of her classes were held on campus and she often attended in person; even after treatment for her reoccurrence. Tashema was tenacious and persistent.
She was a devoted mother to two children; Logan Hewell and Jaylin Hubbard. Jaylin tragically passed away in a car accident on October 1, 2023. He was a parent to Jayston Blade Hubbard and Journee Blaze Hubbard.
In addition to her daughter Logan and two grandchildren, Tashema is survived by her mother, Linda Chester-Jackson, step-father Larry Pelzer, and father, Bishop Dean Jones-Evans, along with seven brothers and two sisters through Bishop Jones-Evans. Also left to mourn are a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and colleagues.
