Ted Leahy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 11, 2012.
LEAHY, Edward (Ted) September 9, 1934 – September 9, 2012 – It is with great sadness, that the family of Ted Leahy announces his passing at home on the morning of his 78th birthday. Loving husband and friend of Pat. Proud father of Catherine, Tim and Brian (Malini). He had fun sharing his love of cookies with his much loved grandson Eóin and enjoyed sharing his passion of rocks with his beloved granddaughter Asha. He is the son of the late Dr. W. Leahy and Helen (Carufel). Brother of Bill (late Amy), late Harry (Barbara Smith, late Genevieve), late Jack (Lee), late Paul (Joan Ann), late Lenna Lamont (late John), Anne Taylor (Norman), Sister Jean Leahy S.J. Brother-in-law of Colleen Greco (late Jerry), late Tom Mahoney (late Donna, late Doris), Kevin Mahoney (Judy) and Karen Grady. Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Ted was kind and caring to his family, friends, neighbours, coworkers and clients at the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines. Ted's love of geology and history resulted in the development of the Simpson Shaft project in Bruce Mines. The "Kindest Man in Algoma" enjoyed his retirement years researching and writing the history of copper mining in the Bruce Mines area, successfully completing the final chapter of his book just prior to his birthday. Friends may call at the Arthur Funeral Home & Cremation Centre on Friday, September 14, 2012 from 1-3 pm. At Ted's request there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions to the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH) or the charity of your choice. A special thank you to Dr. F. Ianni, Kay Reid (N.P.), Dr. S. Fratesi for their care and to Dr. A. Wakegijig for her compassion. Expressions of sympathy may be offered at www.arthurfuneralhome.com.

With a laugh and a smile that went many a mile, adventuring he did go. An adventurous group twas this family, a troupe,a smart bunch, t'wer all in the know. With Ted's passion for rocks he went searching for gold, in the mines with his brother in arms. Those two bros together, Ted and Paul-any weather, would just drown ya with all of their charms. We all, of the family consider ourselves most fortunate to come from such wonderful people. May we carry on the traditions of this great family, through the arts, music, education, exploration, writing and all the other joys of life that make it all so interesting and worth the great adventures we call life. My sincere regards and thoughts to you Aunt Pat, Catherine,Tim, Brian - such a life to celebrate, in sorrow and happiness - he left a legacy for you, his family and to his community as well. A strong, kind and ever humble man who shared all his learning, joyfully. Prayers of Love & Peace, Mary Anne and family.

I am so sorry for your loss. Ted visited the Simpson Mine Shaft where I was working. He was always very informative and friendly. His memory will live on in the wonderful historical work he did in founding the Mine Shaft as a tourist attraction and the book he was writing. My thoughts and prayers are with each member of his family.

I'd like to express my sincere sadness to the Leahy family over the loss of Ted. I worked with Ted for many years in the Soo. I was at MNR and our paths crossed many times as my interest in geology grew. Ted always had time to say hi, chat and tell me what kind of rock I had found along the shore of Superior. Take good care of yourselves, Ted will be missed.

How could you not love Uncle Ted? He was a funny, friendly, interesting and genuine guy. His vast knowledge and passion for rocks always astounded us as kids. Growing up meant lots of invites to their family pool and epic hide and seek games in their house. My thoughts and prayers go out to my wonderful Aunt Pat and cousins Catherine, Tim and Brian and his grand-kids - he will always be missed.

I would like to express my condolences to the family of Ted Leahy. My name is Betty Martin(nee Caufield). I grew up living in the house next door to the Leahy's on Tancred street and have fond memories of the Leahy family as children. I knew Jean best as we were closer in age, but I remember her brother well. My thoughts are with his family during this sad time.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of my late mother Jeannine Drouin. She respected Ted and Pat very much and enjoyed their company. She always looked forward to the days that she went to their home to work though she laughingly and jokingly complained that she got no work done when Ted was around because they talked so much. I am forever grateful for the kindness they showed my mum. I know they will rekindle their friendships and pick their conversations as she knits them socks and slippers in heaven!

Although it's been several years since we served on the library board together Pat, it's been even longer since I dealt with Mr. Leahy while he was working on genealogy. He was always a gentleman and it was such a pleasure to fill his information requests. My condolences to you and your family, may God lift you up and ease your pain. Sincerely,

Mr. Leahy (Ted) was a very nice man and a great guy to work with as I had that opportunity in the 1980's. Ted was a respected Geologist and always had time to help. I'm sure he will be sadly missed by family and many friends.

Mr. Leahy was a wonderfully knowledgeable and funny man. I had the distinct honour of working with him at the Bruce Mines' Simpson Shaft as a highschool student working her way toward college, and then again as an adult responsible for highschool students working their way toward college.
I was pleased to read that his book was finished, and look forward to reading it.
Mr. Leahy's passion for the geology of Algoma (and specifically the Bruce Mines mines) was infectious and inspiring.
May his legacy live on!
