Ted McGregor Sherman, 75, passed away on May 30th in his
Sarasota, Florida home after his last battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Susan, admiring children Whitney (Elaine) and Kate (Patrick), and adoring grandchildren Zoe, Maddie, Lilah, and Jack.
Ted Sherman was born on December 24, 1948 in
Weymouth, Massachusetts, the son of Merle and Marjory Sherman and brother to Laurel and Stuart. The family later moved to
Edgecomb, Maine, where Ted enjoyed what he called a typical New England childhood, with friends from school and scout camps, relishing life (especially summers) in coastal Maine with a fondness that would never leave him. Ted graduated from Kents Hill School in central Maine and subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island.
Following graduation, Ted joined the U.S. Army. After his service, Ted began venturing south, embarking on a journey that would shape the rest of his life. He spent years in
Richmond, Virginia as a banker before moving to Williamsburg. In 1985, Ted departed the banking industry for a role in commercial real estate, a new step into a career in which he would thrive for 38 years. Ted handled all aspects of development, acquisitions, asset and property management and brokerage, ultimately overseeing the development and acquisition of over 8.2 million square feet of commercial income property. He would later co-found Continental Capital Partners, LLC, based in Virginia Beach, in 2013.
In 1994, Ted met the true love of his life, Susan White, along with her son Whitney and daughter Kate. Ted and Susan married in their home port of Norfolk, VA two years later and began traveling the world hand in hand together as one, spending treasured time with friends from all walks of life and creating new adventures. While thoroughly successful in business, Ted's greatest point of pride was always his role as a devoted husband, a caring stepfather, and an adorable grandfather. T-Bear is already sorely missed by the whole gang - and will always be. But the loving time spent with his family lives on forever.
Ted defied long odds by defeating remarkably rare mesothelioma in 2011. His comeback story was heralded among friends and family, but Ted notably took it in quiet stride, humbly grateful for the dozen years of borrowed time he would eventually accrue. Those who surrounded him now feel the solace of that amazing gift.
Ted and Susan became full-time residents of Sarasota in 2017, where they continued to savor Gulf Coast life on the golf course and among the community of great friends they helped build. The friends at Lawrence Pointe and beyond remain a huge support system.
Ted never forgot his ties to Maine and spent plenty of time there every year with Susan, friends, and lots of family, including cousin Paul and his wife Joni. Boothbay Harbor became their home away from home, and Ted thoroughly enjoyed cocktail pahties with lobstah and a good scotch... but mainly time with his soulmate Susan as they journeyed up and down the coast and across the world.
A life well lived by a friend to those who knew him, a good man by every account, and a beloved member of his cherished family. Ted, you are truly loved and always will be.
