I was a postdoctoral fellow of Terrell. He was the most brilliant person I have ever studied under. However, what I recall most prominently was his kindness to and devotion for the individuals who worked with him. He taught me the difference between serious and important. I remember Laura Hill, his wife, fondly as well. And as an occasional nightmare I remember his first tennis serve. He will be missed by a very large community of Physical Chemists and Chemical Physicists who all studied from his multiple textbooks. He will also be sorely missed by the National Academy of Sciences. May the Lord above bless his soul. I also offer my deepest condolence to the family who survives Terrell and Laura Hill.

I was one of Terrell's 5 or so graduate students. I learned much about graciousness in doing science, and rigor, from him, and the role of theory in biology. My first son's middle name is Terrell. Please contact me at [email protected]. Will be passing by Eugene, Oregon in early March en route from Los Angeles to British Columbia.
