Terrence McKINTY

I met Terry in public school in Sudbury and went through high school with him as well. A friend, an athlete, a good student and a great basketball player as we played together for Lockerby for years. We lost touch many years ago but I always held a warm feeling for my good friend. My sympathies to his family, siblings and children.

I went to Lockerby Composite High School with Terry from 1960 to 64 and always remember him as a leader and a great guy to be around with his wicked sense of humour. I met him again at the 50th reunion and had a wonderful but short visit. Sorry to hear of his passing.

Terry's passion for sports and his desire and hard work to make competition accessible to all will be greatly missed.

Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my high school coach and mentor.Terry was such an inspiration to not only myself but the entire group of runners at Lockerby and NAC. To this day I can still remember those cross country training camps at Grundy, fartlek training on the Idywylde Golf Course , hill training at the end of Laurentian road and the Sunday morning long runs during the winter.Terry was the best!
He came up with the best nicknames - Drizzle,Krackers, Sly,Hawk,Rabbit.Will miss you Terry. One day I hope to see you again at heavens gate on the starting line.

Mike and I have had many conversations and chuckles over the years about Terry's tenacity and his interest in his students. We always knew that there would be something interesting happening in the gym after school and this drew students like magnets. Lots of friendly competition. We are very sorry to hear of his passing - way too early. Condolences to all that will miss his presence.

I will always remember the years we spent in the arenas with Terry. He was a great man with a competitive spirit but always made us laugh. My deepest sympathies to your whole family, especially Michael and Austin.

I first met Terry in the late 1970s, in Waterloo. We argued heatedly about road race certification, of all things - it really was the old days! We had diametrically opposed views, but thinking about the arguments still makes me laugh. Because you could never be mad at Terry - he was so disarming and always seemed to be smiling. I met Terry again in the 80s in Ottawa when he was working for the Canadian Track and Field Association. I can still hear him telling the story of his first heart attack and the questions he asked the heart specialist before his surgery - totally Terry with that laugh and a sense of the ridiculous and a clear-eyed view of the situation. And then I ran into Terry again in the early 2000s, when I started running again and entered a number of his somersault races. I can still hear him yelling my name and my time as I finished a 5K at Carleton. Terry's place in my life is far far greater than the rather small number of times I saw him. He is one of the most compelling people I ever met. I think of him often, and it always makes me smile.

My deepest sympathy to Christine, Austin and Michael. Terry was a great man, thoughtful and kind. Always looking to organize a new event promoting health and active living to all. Communities and all of us are losing someone special.

Terry was a friend of mine. He had a kind heart and was an inspiration to those around him, especially young people. I have many good memories of Terry. It was a privilege to have known him.

In life there are times when you meet someone that has a profound effect on you. Terry was one of those people that I will hold dear to my heart forever because of person he was. A good man who wanted to make a difference in the lives of people in his community. A straight shooter, with a big heart, a great sense of humour and someone who lived his life to the fullest. I am very proud to have known him for the short time that I did and will remember him for inspiring us to do well which is one of the reasons the Carefor Run/Walk has been a success.

I worked with Terry in many events,He always had a positive outlook when things got tough. HIs philosophy was one.where a person could be part of the problen,or part of the solution.
He influnced many people during his lifetime.

I am so sorry for your loss. Terry gave some much to the community. He ran the first race I ever ran - this is a great loss.

Upon the first time meeting Terry in person his empathetic and caring nature were realized. He shared a past with my family in pioneering triathlon in Ontario. He was so "present" and his positive winning attitude was infectious. Our bond was short-lived but I know he will continue to pass his grace on through his legacy.

Thanks Terry for providing so many athlete's with an opportunity to race in a safe,fun and competitive way.

We were saddened to hear of Terry's passing. Madeleine and I would like to send our condolences to Christine and the boys and further to all the McKinty family. I spent some of the best years of my life with Terry, we worked on the Junior Pan Am Track and Field event in Sudbury starting in about 1978 and as Terry could do he talked me into Chairing the organizing committee of the II World Junior Track and Field event held in Sudbury 1988. This required Terry and I to travel together on many occasions to many shores. Terry was a friend, mentor and just an all round good person. His dedication was contagious , and he brought leadership and wisdom to any situation. We will miss you Terry.

I didn't start participating in triathlons because of Terry. I used to have to travel great distances from Ottawa to get enough of my triathlon fix. However just when I needed it Terry, Christine and Somersault came along with a full calendar of events catering to all and right here within an hour's drive of Ottawa. It had to be impressive how the Somersault events catered to all from hard core elite to the first timers. Want to swim and bike but have trouble running? No problem. They have a Swim-Bike Duathlon? Want an early season triathlon but the lake water is still too cold? No problem. We'll start with a pool swim.
Every finisher, no, every participant is a winner. Thank you Terry for so many people for so many years being enabled to enjoy and feel good about being winners.

I knew Terry. A person of integrity, candour and virtue. He gave of himself selflessly and generously to his vision that young lives could be positively influenced, that self-confidence, poise, moral and civic values, fairness could be found and developed in the principles of athleticism and sport. We are thinking of you and the boys and the heavy hearts you are now bearing. Be strong. You will get through this. Life has changed for you; however, you had a terrific father and companion who will always live on in your memories of him.

Terry was an inspiration for always doing and saying the right thing. It was a privilege to have worked with him. He lived up to being a true gentleman, a scholar and a friend.

Terry was a 'true believer' in the importance of physical play, not just for kids, but for all of us. He spent a lifetime as an athlete, coach, teacher, sports administrator and events organizer, promoting the value of an active lifestyle and competitive recreation.

Linda and I were 'early adopters' of Terry's philosophy and have so many fond memories of participating in Terry and Christine's triathlons and other races for over 25 years. Whenever we arrived for the start of a race we knew that Terry had been up since well before sunrise setting up course cones, water stations, transition zones..., his focus always on the participants' positive experience. Despite his attention to detail, the creative nature of his events invited the occasional surprise; like the time the lead cyclists in an off road triathlon near Beachburg couldn't find the trail because a beaver had felled a large tree overnight. "Well, you know, we can only try to do our best", I can hear him say.

Terry gave so much to the multi-sport community in Eastern Ontario. A kind and generous man who inspired those around him - he will be missed by us all. Jeff and Linda

Terry was a special friend, confidant nearly 25 years in my life; he always had a smile on his face that glint in his eye! He loved his boys always spoke fondly of you guys. Knew how to calm a situation down at Events, I loved his commitment so everyone would enjoy their day. Backed up motorcycle officials every time, he will be fondly missed.

Terry was the real deal. He was true to his principles and dedicated to the growth and development of everyone he could help; he was a true coach and teacher. Selfless and often generous to a fault, he was always looking to help others reach their goals and pat them on the back along the way. He was positive, kind, thoughtful and always quick with a joke and a smile.

When I reached out to him for advice many years ago about running a large race event for the Ottawa Inline Skating Club, not only did he provide valuable insights and encouragement, but he lent his time and equipment as well, even though it was extremely inconvenient to do so.

Though we've lost a great person, his teachings and legacy will live on. I'm a better person for having know Terry, and I know I'm just one of thousands.
