Terrence "Terry" Hogan Obituary

In Loving Memory of Terrence Barbour Hogan

Our beloved father, Terrence Barbour Hogan, passed away on Friday, April 4, 2025. He was born on December 18, 1948, in Birmingham, Alabama, the first son among six children born to Gertrude "Trudy" and Sam Hogan.

Terry grew up in the East Lake neighborhood of Birmingham and attended St. Barnabas, John Carroll Catholic High School, and Auburn University, where he earned a BS in Business Administration in 1970. After college, he served briefly in the U.S. Navy, where he met his first wife, Cindy. Together, they had three children: Katie (Jason Hugues), Mary (Jerry Breazeale), and Sean (Katy) Hogan.

Following his time in the Navy, Terry began his banking career at C&S Bank in Atlanta, GA. During that time, he earned an MBA with a concentration in Finance from Georgia State University. He returned to Birmingham in 1977 to begin a long and successful career at Central Bank, which later became BBVA Compass Bank. In 2008, he joined the Joe Jolly Investment group, remaining there until the end of his career.

Terry thrived as an investment banker for over 35 years, perfectly suited to a role that combined sharp analytical skills with genuine charm. He could perform complex calculations in his head and had a natural talent for connecting with people-many of whom became lifelong friends.

He was a true numbers man, known for his strategic mind and fierce competitiveness, especially in games like chess, bridge, rook, spades, and gin. He never let his kids win just for the sake of it-but when you did beat him, you knew you'd really accomplished something.

Beyond his sharp mind, Terry was also goofy, joyful, and full of life. He loved to dance and often said the only reason he got dates in high school was because he could-and would-dance with every girl in the room. He had a relaxed, no-frills nature and was the dad who rode the roller coaster, scared your friends on Halloween, and sang loudly (and mostly in tune). He loved Auburn football, summer afternoons at Smith Lake, and any flavor of ice cream. From him, we learned not to take life too seriously and to savor each moment.

Terry was deeply loved, especially by his wife, Barbara, whom he married in September 2020. Theirs was a friendship renewed in 2014 after the death of his second wife, Sherrilyn. Together they traveled to beautiful places and also treasured quiet nights on the patio with ice cream and a breeze. Sadly, their time together was cut short by Lewy body dementia-but dementia does not define our dad or our memories of him.

We remember Terry as a man full of life, love, and joy. He cherished life's simple pleasures-a good glass of bourbon, a bowl of Moose Tracks ice cream, and a Jimmy Buffett song on the radio.

Terry is survived by his wife Barbara; his three children; and his three grandchildren: Savannah, William, and Nolan. He is also survived by his four sisters-Ann, Patti, Beth, and Kay-and his brother Kevin, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Trudy and Sam Hogan, his close friend and brother-in-law Larry Duncan and his second wife, Sherrilyn Hogan.

Please join us in celebrating the life of this wonderful man.

Funeral services will be held at St. Francis Xavier Church, 2 Xavier Circle Birmingham, AL 35213 Friday, April 11, 2025, 1 PM CST.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to: Lewy Body Dementia Association www.lbda.org or Expect Care Hospice www.expectcarehospice.com 501 Riverchase Parkway Suite 200 Hoover, AL 35244.

He got moved out of our facility and I went and seen him at the new facility that he had to go to get rehab when he fell and he remembered me and was just A smiling and was so worried about not being able to walk again and I was like you got it. You can do this. I´m telling you I´m so sorry for your loss. He was a wonderful man. I loved him dearly. I sure am gonna miss you.

You will be missed by many of us but especially your kids grandkids and Barbara. I'm sure Aunt Trudy welcomed you into Paradise and will try to keep you, Larry and Marshall from making too much of a disturbace!

As a graduate of John Carroll, class of 1966, I want to extend my expression of sadness to the family of Terry, as I knew his name. May you experience blessings and peace at this moment, knowing that Terry was a man among men. This is the second person in our class that I know of died secondary to LBD, the other one being Sam Chiarella, who died a couple of years ago and also lived a successful last part of his life in Atlanta.
The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Rest in love and joy, Terry, and may you listen to the heartbeat of God's spirit eternally.
So be it.

Our time knowing Terry was brief, as we met him when we became he and Barbara´s neighbors at Smith Lake... but we really enjoyed his company, and shared his love of the lake and our Auburn Tigers. He and Barbara were/ are so very welcoming to us. May God bless and comfort each of the family and friends who grieve the loss of this gentleman God Bless You.
