I still miss Terry to this date. He was not only my boss, but more of a friend. We have coffee every day, we talked about stuff. We had friendly bet on golf tournament. We golfed together. We watched football games together. We went for IKEA breakfast, we went to visit full house lottery. I wish Terry could see what I am right now, with my family and sons. Terry is a special person to me.

I was stunned when I heard of Terry's passing. Terry was a friend and mentor to both my wife and myself. He helped me with everything from educational technology to house repairs. He and his family are close to our hearts and Terry will be missed deeply.

Terry was a generous and supportive colleague who gave his time cheerfully to instructors in need of his guidance and expertise. He was also a wonderful presence and an exemplary family man in the Parkallen neighbourhood south of the university, where he will be deeply missed by friends and neighbours.

I met Terry 11 years ago when I first arrived at the University of Alberta. Since then, I've known Terry as a friend and valued colleague. He was highly skilled at making things happen and was able to bring ideas to reality with a great deal of ingenuity. I will always remember him as a sincere and helpful colleague. I will miss him greatly and send my sympathies to his family.

I was shocked and very much saddened to hear of Terry's passing. I had appreciated his cheerful presence for many years, and although he never succeeded in making me computer-competent, I enjoyed enormously all contacts with him. My most treasured memory of him was the wonderful, witty Dickensian performance he gave at Philip Knight's farewell party. It gave us all a glimpse of the literary and dramatic talents I don't think he often revealed. I shall miss him very much and send my deepest sympathy to his family. The loss of such a splendid husband and father must be grievous indeed. I'm afraid I'll still be out of town for the memorial, but my thoughts will be very much with you.

I worked in the Technologies for Learning Centre for four years with Terry as my supervisor. Terry was very professional and passionate about his work. Behind his professional profile was a very sensitive, thoughtful and caring person. We will miss him.

Terry will be missed. Although I didn't know him as well as others, I was impressed by his confidence and kindness. He had a ready smile and attentive disposition.

I enjoyed working with Terry when he was in charge of the documentation team in "Computing Services" and learning from him about technical documentation. When he left this department, I continued to enjoy conversations with him on the bus or around campus, he was always so full of great ideas and enthusiasm. I am going to miss seeing him. My deepest sympathies to his family.

May I quote from the last paragraph of my second critical book on Freud, Mousetraps & the Moon,(2000)? "It is a pleasure to record my appreciation of Terry Butler for his careful production of the computer-generated typesetting of this book. The technical support he has offered was, for me, enhanced by the friendly enthusiasm he has shown for the project over the months of our collaboration." This excellent man will be sorely missed by the University of Alberta. Robert WILCOCKS, Professor Emeritus, MLCS.

I worked for Terry at the Technology for Learning Centre, and later on a number of other projects in arts computing. Terry's passion for computing in the arts influenced my career greatly. He was always a joy to be around and to work with. I will miss him dearly. My condolences to his family.
