Terry Martin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 2, 2025.
Terry Lee Martin, lovingly known as "Daddy M.," passed away on March 21, 2025, in Millinocket, Maine, at the age of 71. Born on December 12, 1953, in Lincoln, Maine, Terry lived a life shaped by devotion to family, service to his country, and a deep love for sports and the outdoors.

A proud graduate of Mattanawcook Academy's class of 1972, Terry was offered a football scholarship to the University of Maine at Orono but chose to enlist in the U.S. Navy. He trained as a dental technician in San Diego, California, graduating in the top 10% of his class, and served from 1972 to 1976 in San Diego and Washington, D.C. His pursuit of knowledge continued throughout his life-he earned an Associate of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Maine at Orono in 1987 and later obtained his Commercial Driver's License from S.A.V.E. in Houlton in 1997.

Terry built a diverse career defined by hard work and adaptability. He worked as an enumerator for the U.S. Census Bureau and held various sales and delivery positions with Lanes Construction, Pepsi Cola, Vacationland Snacks, Health Co. Dental Supplies, and Equitable Financial Services. His skills also contributed to numerous construction projects over the years. His proudest achievements included top salesman and sales awards with Pepsi Cola over several years of his tenure.

Terry found joy in life's simple pleasures-spending time with "all his girls," attending his granddaughter's ball games and school events, playing pool and cards, riding bike, hunting and fishing, reading sci-fi fantasy novels, listening to Rock 'n' Roll and Blues music, and dancing. As a lifelong New England sports fan, he remained loyal to the Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins. His love for sports extended beyond spectating; he played Fantasy Football, Basketball, and Baseball while also coaching "his kids" in Little League baseball and softball as well as Pee Wee basketball. Even into his fifties and sixties, he remained active by playing and umpiring Men's League and Co-ed softball.

Terry enjoyed annual hunting, fishing and camping trips to Scraggly Lake and Matagamon Lake; time at camp in Passadumkeag and on Plunkett Pond. He'd boast meeting Ted Williams and Bud Leavitt with his daughter at Shin Pond. Terry cherished time at Scraggly lake with his buddies from Mass. for 25 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Maria (Duffy) Martin; his daughter Ashlee (Martin) Costigan and her husband Josh; and his cherished granddaughters Chloe and Charlene "Charlee" Costigan. He also leaves behind his brother Steve Martin; sister Kathy Martin and her partner David Smart; brother-in-law Terry Duffy (Cathy); sisters-in-law Lana Robinson (Billy) and Mona Craig; extended family, John Costigan (Karen); nieces Kim and Melissa Drinkwater, Darcy Merry, Lindsay Hall, Shannon Mathers, Terri Slauenwhite; nephews Ryan and Jason Albert; best friends Steve Guiggey, Steve Vose and Billy McNally; along with many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

He was predeceased by his mother Shirley June Trask; grandparents Luther and Adeline Martin; mother-in-law Margaret Duffy; sister-in-law Sandra Albert; brother-in-law Paul Albert; nephews Aaron Marston, Chris Marston, and Kevin Merry; best friends Tim Hamel, Wayne Bailey and Wayne Astle.

Terry's legacy is one of love for family and loyalty to friends. He was a master of story telling and spent his latter years descriptively sharing his life experiences on Facebook. He is now sharing stories where the streets are paved with gold and the Pepsi is always cold. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

There will be celebration of life for Terry at a later date per his request. More details to follow.

Terry was one of my favorite parts of supervising the 2020 Census! He was such a bright spot in our workday; when the Census was done, we had some great conversations about nature, family, sports, and music. I came to consider him a dear (if distant) friend, and it was always a pleasant surprise to run into him around southern Aroostook! I was so sad to hear of his passing. I hope word spreads far & wide when the Celebration of Life is planned so I can join the many people who knew & loved Terry in celebrating his full life!
