Terry Stanley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 16 to Jan. 17, 2023.
You knew when he entered a room because suddenly, all the energy flowed his direction. He commanded it with not with force, but by his humor and his classic good looks. He drew you in with stories that were larger than life because he too, was larger than life.

He seemed to have led nine lives in his 82 years.

"He used the whole runway", reflected my brother.

My father's best advice to me was to "simplify, not complicate".

But nothing about my father was simple. T.O. Stanley led an epically complicated life.

When he stepped out into the cosmos late the night of January 13, leaving the constraints of his earthly body behind, there was a shift felt. An instant void.

Terry O'Neal Stanley, or "T.O." to most, was born December 6, 1940 to Joyce (Terry) Stanley and Earl O'Neal Stanley in Big Spring, Texas.

T.O. played virtually every sport available to him and played it masterfully. He drove faster, teed off straighter, dove deeper, hit harder, aimed truer and sat higher in the saddle than most knew possible. He received a baseball scholarship to UNM where he studied art and was scouted by the St. Louis Cardinals for a spell before his mother put her foot down.

Before attending UNM, he took a gap year traveling the world with a dear friend, working their way as they went, living in beautiful, unspoiled places. Their travels were chronicled in the Big Spring Herald utilizing cartoons T.O. drew and mailed home, delighting local readers.

If you knew T.O., you've seen his 1959 World Champion calf-roping belt buckle, he was a proud horseman.

T.O. moved to El Paso, Texas in the late 1970's and there he remained. At one point he was voted one of El Paso's "Most Eligible Bachelors".

T.O. loved living big, being the life of the party and was always ready to spin a good yarn about his notorious adventures and acquaintances.

Owner of T.O. Stanley Boots, he designed and made boots for a list of familiar names such as; former President George W. Bush, Eric Clapton, Johnny Carson, John Denver, Clint Eastwood, Wayne Gretzky, Merle Haggard, George Strait, George Lucas and Priscilla Presley to name a few. Many of whom became dear friends. T.O. considered himself a Bootmaker above all things.

T.O. was preceded in death by his father, Earl O'Neal, mother, Joyce, sister, Chere, and brother, John Patrick.

He is survived by his daughter, Kara (Stanley) Chilleri-Davis of Granbury, TX, his son, Todd Stanley of Colorado, his grandson, Dominik Chilleri of Kerrville, TX, his grandson, John Chilleri of Livermore, CA, his grandson, Bohde Davis of Granbury, TX, and his great-granddaughter, Rylee Chilleri of Kerrville, TX.

So maybe when I read this I didn´t really believe it and I called his phone number, only to hear a message that it was no longer in order. I actually had looked for T.O. online after meeting the husband of the woman who is writing T.O.´s memoirs and happens to be a neighbor of mine, on Montana. This was how our lives had crisscrossed all of my life.
After meeting a young man online whose name I think was Chris or maybe Scott, decades ago. He worked with T.O., as an agent as such, and he told me I had to come meet T.O. next time I was in El Paso. He told me to bring all of my favorite boots of which I had sent him pictures.
I had my Mom with me who is T.O´s age. We usually would visit with the Kallman family when in El Paso and T.O. and Eddie had heard of each other and wanted to meet, so we arranged that. I showed up at T.O.´s office , with my Mom, and a handful of boots from all sorts of famous, respected boot makers, Rios of Mercedes, Stallion, J.B. Hill and of course my favorites ever, T.O. Stanley from Cutter Bills. T.O. seriously was briefly speechless upon seeing my little collection, which I soon learned was Not his normal state of being. As it miraculously turned out T.O. had personally designed every pair of my favorite boots! He told me the stories of when he owned Rios, helped Stallion out (I hate to brag but those are Ferrari red American Alligator belly with French calf shafts that I afforded myself the luxury of buying new.) He was supposed to be partners with J.B. Hill and had designed my gorgeous simple brown luxury calf boots I bought at that luxury western wear shop that used to be at Sunset Plaza (Billy Martin´s).
My T.O. Stanley boots happened to be very special to me and it turned out to T.O. as well. They fit me like they were made for me, were basically unworn when I found them, and are as comfortable as tennis shoes! I adore them like a favorite dog!
T.O. told me the story of being in someone´s kitchen in Dallas, where I grew up, and on the phone during a Super Bowl game. As he was an artist he doodled, like my Mom does and they were/are both Sagittarius, artist, and born days apart. He doodled an impressive design with his initials. By the time he got to telling me about these boots, which say "Cutter Bill" inside, I thought he had to be pulling my leg! Being from Texas, I have heard some tall ones! Then T.O. Stanley handed me the note pad in front of him and he had doodled the same design as we talked! He showed me how it was his initials! No denying! He was for real!
How in the world could this little boot loving girl from Dallas having then about 50 pairs of boots, and my 4 favorites were all magically designed/made by T.O. Stanley sometimes decades apart and all with someone else´s name in them? I would have never known had I not accepted an off the wall invitation to visit him in El Paso! I am including the pictures of my favorites. I will add that T.O. kept my Mom and I semi hostage in his office for 5 hours talking up a storm, refusing to go to lunch, while he tried to talk me out of these boots! He wouldn´t even make me another pair! He said these had to remain one offs! These were supposedly a men´s boot, but I have narrow feet and no men´s boots fit like these and that is probably why they went unworn! They were just waiting for me!
T.O. and I stayed in touch for many years and he never would make me any more boots! I do not have a pair he made expressly for me. We designed them together. but they never got made. I have several pairs I have purchased over the years. None fit like this pair that I guess was "made for me" made to fit me anyway.
I enjoyed T.O. though he was ornery and stubborn! And he was proud of it! We had both rodeo´d and spent a lot of time in Mexico, Texas and New Mexico. He had made boots for some of my celebrity friends and they have always been real proud to have his boots! I see notably missing off the list are Nick and Rebecca Nolte. I know others but writing this and having lost T.O. this year and recently Rebecca, this is making me tear up so I am going to stop. T.O. was a great boot maker a d I have owned, or spent time with and refused, all the greats and I think he was the best. I am sure he is fitting angels in heaven with his magical boots now. So sad I didn´t get to see him again before he left us. I hope y´all enjoy the picture(s), whatever it lets me post.

I am so sorry to have just learned of the passing of T.O. Though I only knew T.O. a few years (but a moment in his long and eventful life) the friendship we formed will forever be a gift to me. While being tasked with the immense undertaking of working on T.O.´s memoirs, he regaled me many fabulous stories. I was lucky enough to join him at his home tucked into the El Paso mountainside. His home was like a museum of his adventures, each item thoughtfully placed with stories all their own. With Dean Martain on the radio, and whiskey in our glasses we sat on the terrace and watched sunsets and thunderstorms pass by speaking of success and failures, love, loss, friendships and family. And of-course we spoke of his cowboy days and the passion he put into his beautiful work as one of the worlds best cowboy-boot makers. He was larger than life and I know his absence will leave a hole in the hearts of all that knew him. My condolences goes out to his loved ones, and especially to his family. Xx

I read of a man who stood to speak At the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on the tombstone From the beginning ...to the end. He noted that first came the date of birth And spoke the following with tears, But he said what mattered most of all Was the dash between those years. For it matters not, how much we own, The cars...the house...the cash. What matters is how we live and love And how we spend our dash. So, think about this long and hard. Are there things you'd like to change ? For you never know how much time is left That can still be arranged. If we could just slow down enough To consider what's true true and real And always try to understand The way other people feel. And be less quick to anger And show appreciation more And love the people in our lives Like we've never loved before. If we treat each other with respect And more often wear a smile, Remembering this special dash Might only last a little while. So, when your eulogy is being read With your life's actions to rehash...Would you be proud of the things they sat About how you spent YOUR dash ?

Terry and I were in high school together. I knew Joyce, Chere, and Pat. I was with Terry and his friend before they left for their trip around the world. There were some hysterical times. Will miss him.
