Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 28, 2007.
Thail Dastrup
After a long and full life, Velma Thail Ottley Dastrup was released from her sojourn on earth in the early morning hours of April 25, 2007. Thail was born in Delta, Utah, July 15, 1926 to Herbert John and Velma Curtis Ottley, the youngest of three children. She was raised in Aurora, Utah and graduated from North Sevier High School in Salina.
Thail married her high school sweetheart, Ross B Dastrup, in the Salt Lake Temple on February 6, 1945. He passed away December 23, 1996. Together, they raised six children: Carolyn (Dennis) Sampson, Neal (Brenda), Max (Claudia), Dan (Teresa), Janice Goltz and Jeffrey (Lauren). She has a growing posterity of 34 grandchildren and 53 great grandchildren. In every way, she fulfilled her calling as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and her sister, Phyllis Boren. She is survived by all of her children and her brother, Quentin Ottley.
Thail was a member of the LDS Church and served faithfully in many capacities throughout her life. She was deeply loved and cherished by her family, friends, neighbors and ward members wherever she lived.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday April 30th at the Lindon 19th Ward Chapel, 731 East Center, Lindon. Friends and family may call Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street in Orem and also Monday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the ward chapel. Burial will be in the Orem City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sundbergolpinmortuary.com.
The family wishes to thank the many caring doctors, nurses and other professional care givers who were so thoughtful and helpful to our mother throughout her time of need, as well as an appreciation to her many wonderful friends, neighbors and ward members who cared for her through the years. A special thanks is given to the dedicated staff at the Heritage Convalescent Center.

I know that most of you think of her as "Mom," "Grandmother" and "Great-grandma," but to me Aunt Thail was exactly that: The ideal aunt - so gentle, loving and thoughtful, with a wonderful smile and an unforgettable laugh. I truly loved seeing her smile and laugh, and have memories of her doing exactly that going back to my earliest childhood. She is also inextricably tied to my mom, for they loved each other so. As Carolyn and I noted together the other night, they are the perfect example of what loving sisters are supposed to be. Having lost both of them now in the span of a single year, I can't help but feel sad, and grieve for and with all of you, my wonderful cousins. She loved loved loved her family! Your remarks and songs at the funeral were perfect, too, just the right balance of tears and memories. Love to you all.

Dear Cousins,

Reesa and I send our love and sympathy, and wish we were able to attend the services and give you all a warm hug and kiss. That is how people here share their sorrow. We loved our visits with Aunt Thail, and feel a closeness to all of you. It is hard to think about, that we have all been orphaned with the loss of our parents, but the gospel truth is, we are eternal, and life does go on, both here and there!

Love, Elder Phillip and Sister Reesa Boren

My heart is full of love and sadness for my cousins and Uncle Quentin. I feel love knowing that the Ottley Sisters are together in a better place. Aunt Thail was special to everyone who knew her. We all loved her spirit!

Our sympathy is extended to all of the Ross and Thail Dastrup posterity who grieve the loss of a sweet woman, Thail. I have always appreciated the kind and gentle demeanor of my aunt Thail. Our hope is that your sadness may be soothed by the Spirit of the Comforter during this time of parting. Love from the Ottley's!
