Theodore Roy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 16, 2016.
Theodore "Ted" S. Roy, 81, formerly of East Smithfield and recently of Wellsboro, passed away at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre with his family at his side on Oct. 6, 2016. He was born near East Smithfield, the only son of Ruth and Stanley Roy on Nov. 12, 1935. Ted was the devoted husband of Maxine (Clark) Roy, they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary this year on June 19.
Ted was a kind, loving man whose warm-hearted smile brought joy to cherished memories for his family and all those who were touched by his life. Through his example of respect, honesty and hard work, he instilled many of these same values in his children. Even though he was unable complete high school, he became an avid reader and letter writer. He loved sending cards for all occasions to family, friends and the residents of Park Hill Manor, where he and Maxine have resided since 2008.
He retired in 2001, from Val Chem Co., in Sayre, where he started in maintenance and later became the delivery truck driver. In his final years at Val Chem, he drove his beloved Brockway truck over 300,000 miles making deliveries throughout Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.
Ted was a former member of the Federated Church of East Smithfield where he served as a trustee for many years. He was a recent member of the United Methodist Church of Wellsboro where he enjoyed participating in many volunteer services. He further exhibited his volunteer spirit through his work with Boy Scout Troop 10 of Bentley Creek, the Federated Church Youth Group, and the local food bank in Wellsboro. While residing at Park Hill Manor, he has served on the welcome/hospitality committee for many years and as president of the tenant association for two years.
Ted is survived by his wife, Maxine C. Roy of Wellsboro; and six children, JoAnne M. Bitner (Robert) of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Jeanette K. Briggs (William Arbogast, fiancée) of Palmyra, Pa., Jacqueline L. Roy of Sarasota, Fla., Jenifer R. Putnam (Keith) of Mansfield, Pa., Jefferey W. Roy of Bentley Creek, Pa., and Jamie A. Roy (Libby) of Dover, Del.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Liz Hill of Waverly, N.Y., and Myrtle Timm of Athens, Pa.; and a brother-in-law, Gary Talada of Utica, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Jonas Wright; and three sisters, Harriet Lattimer, Kate Tracy and Grace Talada.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Wellsboro (corner of Main and Queen streets). Please join the family beginning at noon for visitation with memories and sharing. The family has chosen to provide memory cards for guests who would like to write thoughts and memories of Ted. A selection of these will be included in Ted's eulogy, which will be delivered by Pastor Rich Hanlon.
Flowers for the service will be provided by the family and Maxine requests that memorial donations be sent to Sayre House of Hope, The Guthrie Clinic Resource Development, One Guthrie Square, Sayre, PA 18840-9985. A private interment ceremony is planned for a later date.

Uncle Ted was the my Uncle from my Mother's family. I remember dinners at the Roy's. I was especial fond of his down to earth approach to problems, decision making, and patience with others. His understanding nature is what I remember the most. My mother so loved her brother. Tim & Cindy Hill

I first met Ted when he came to grade school in Wetona. We became life long friends and enjoyed many notes and letters over the years from "Beautiful downtown East Smithfield" and "Beautiful downtown Wellsboro." We will miss our summer visits. One of my favorite memories was an invite to a corn husking bee on hartnesssburg road at their farm.

Dear Roy family,
I'm thankful that I had the opportunity to meet Ted & Maxine years ago while hanging out with JoAnne. And then more recently, to see them at the museum where I work. Such terrific people. And just like so many have said, Ted will always be remembered for his kindness & radiant smile, and for his legacy of faith! Carry it forward!

When I arrived in East Smithfield Ted introduced himself as Ted Roy the man with two first names. That's so you will never forget me, he said. And I never have. Our prayers go out to Maxine and the family.

I will always remember how you called me an "old maid". I'd say but Uncle Ted I'm not old and I'm not a maid. You'd say no your not old but your not married yet so that makes you an old maid... as your giving me a hug.
