Theodore Santos Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 22, 2013.
Theodore R. Santos (Ted) passed away peacefully in his home on March 21, 2013. He was 90 years old. Ted was born on August 31, 1922 in Sacramento, California. His family moved to San Diego in 1928, and became part of the large Portuguese tuna fishing community in Point Loma. After graduating from Point Loma High School in 1941, Ted joined the Coast Guard and served his country during World War II. After his discharge, Ted joined his family in the commercial tuna fishing industry. He later changed careers, studying and apprenticing to become a Journeyman Electrician. Ted retired after 20 years in the Electrical trade at the age of 62.

Ted cherished his family. His wife of 50 years, Alice, and daughter, Stephanie Williams (husband Michael), predecease him. He is survived by his children, Sandra Santos of San Jose, CA, Shanna Thomas (husband Tim) of Coronado, CA, Theodore Santos II (wife Kari) of Boulder, Colorado, and grandchildren, Dawna Graham, Tristan Santos, Benjamin Santos, Marley Santos all of Boulder, Colorado, David Williams (wife Consuelo) of Kihei, Maui, Hawaii, and great grandchildren, Tyler Williams of Granville, Ohio, and Nash Williams of Kihei, Maui, Hawaii.

Ted was an avid orchid grower and had belonged to the San Diego Orchid Society. He enjoyed telling stories to the delight of everyone, and always had time for a good joke. Ted also loved animals, and the Santos household was always filled with birds, cats, dogs, and/or fish. In his later years, Ted rescued a cockatiel, whom he named Peaches. He truly had a way with all creatures and was a true "animal whisperer"!

A mass and celebration of life will be held in memory of Ted at St. Agnes Church in Pt. Loma, on Friday, April 19 at 10:00 a.m. A reception will follow at the St. Agnes Hall, 1140 Evergreen Street, San Diego, CA. A private internment of his ashes at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery will take place on a later date, where he will join Alice in their final resting place.

In lieu of flowers or cards, we invite you to make a donation in Ted's name to: the San Diego Orchid Society, for their efforts in orchid conservation, http://www.sdorchids.com/Conservation.html,
or the San Diego Bird Rescue, whose motto is "Saving One Beak at a Time",

Rest in peace Uncle Ted. I have so many childhood memories of times spent with Uncle Ted and Aunt Alice. Trips to the beach, yummy back yard BBQs and trips to the Silver Strand for clamming outings. I remember Uncle Ted taking me into his greenhouse to show his exotic orchid collection. The blooms made a big impression on me.
We will miss you but know you are with Aunt Alice, Stephanie and your siblings. Cheers to a long life well lived. No one can ask for more.
Love Marylou

I had the privilege of spending many years in the Santos home as I have been a friend of Shanna since junior high. My mom and Ted actually attended PLHS together in 1940-1941, and Aice and my mom were pregnant with Shanna and me at the same time! There was so much love, fun and food in the house whenever we hung out at the Santos home. Ted loved to tease us and was always sharing words of wisdom for our futures as well. I will miss Ted, but I am so thankful he was here for 90 years and now gets to spend eternity with Alice, Stephanie, my mom, dad and other dear family and friends.
My love to all of you, Julie Nicholson Johnson

Dear Cousins I am so sorry for your loss. I will remember Uncle Ted for his green thumb, the green house out in the backyard and especially our infamous camping trip up to Eurkea! My God bless you all.

My fun-loving uncle who was more like a big brother will always be remembered as creative, witty beyond
belief, hard-headed,, opinionated, lovable, and extremely gifted in many fields. And he was probably
right at least 90 per cent of the time! Oh how we will
miss him . Love and peace to you all. Annalee
