Theresa (Terry) Holland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 11 to May 12, 2023.
On May 8th, Terry Holland passed away after a 4 month hard fought battle with cancer. Terry was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and most currently resided in Alexandria, Virginia. She is survived by her mother, Gloria Patricia (Pat) Holland; sisters, Dorothy Simpson (Kevin) and Catherine Flynn (James); her brother, Stephen Holland (Carol Dougherty); and her sister-in-law, Kristina Holland. She is also survived by 8 nieces and nephews, Kellee Kramer (Larry), Jaime Fahy (Jason), Jon Holland, Mallory Holland, Nicole Keen (Lex), Ryan Holland, Katie Simpson, and Elizabeth Simpson; as well as 10 grand nieces and nephews. Terry was predeceased by her father, Robert R. (Bob) Holland, Sr and her brother, R Randolph (Randy) Holland, Jr.

Terry held advanced degrees from Western Maryland College (McDaniel College) and Indiana University. She was a career mathematical statistician (34 years) with the United States Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). In 1979, she accepted a full time position as a mathematical statistician developing mathematical models to forecast crop yields. She held progressively important positions in the Topeka, Kansas field office, Portland, Oregon field office, Washington, DC headquarters, as well as Deputy Director of the New England field office in Concord, New Hampshire. Terry found her true calling with the NASS International Program Office (IPO) helping other countries develop effective programs for agricultural statistics. Terry led programs in many countries such as Poland, South Africa, and Kazakhstan. She often hosted, trained, and escorted groups of foreign officials who came to the United States to learn how to improve their agricultural statistics.

Terry was a seasoned international and domestic traveler, and she especially enjoyed planning and traveling to all 50 United States where she visited many National Parks and baseball parks. She was an avid Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles baseball fan as well as Washington Commanders, Baltimore Ravens, and San Francisco 49ers NFL fan. She loved visiting her college friends (affectionately known as the Munchkins), her beach buddies, and her NASS colleagues. Her favorite pastimes were playing Scrabble and Mexican Train dominoes; playing golf; attending concerts, musicals and plays; and completing Washington Post crossword puzzles. Terry loved all music genres, and she would make playlists for various occasions.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Angels Chapel on the campus of the Charlestown Retirement Community, 711 Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville, Maryland 21228. Terry was my first girlfriend (7th grade). Unfortunately I moved away to Va that summer. I've often thought of how smart, funny, beautiful, and mature she was. So sorry to learn of her passing but heartened to read that she had a successful and full life.

I had the pleasure of working with Terry but also of playing golf with her. After my wife and I moved to Maryland, we would meet with Terry for lunch. She was a great friend and will miss her!

Terry was a regular attendee at our NASS retiree breakfasts, and we will miss her greatly. She was also part of my Nationals fan group, and she always found the bright side of things no matter how bad they were. I'm still deeply saddened by her loss. May God be with the Holland family at this time of grieving.

There is a redbud tree in our community that Terry and I spent an afternoon selecting. Terry chose the color. It is remarkably special as was she.

We will not be the same in her absence. Where there was always a good friend and neighbor, now there is a huge void. Gone way too soon and sorely missed.

I worked with Teri in list sampling frame group. She was a true statistician and worked really hard to make sure that NASS had the most statistically reliable samples. She was always helpful with information that help me be a better statistician. She will definitely be missed by everyone that knew her. I am so sad at her passing.
