Thomas Andrew Dodds Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 17, 2023.
Thomas Andrew Dodds died peacefully in his home in Salt Lake City on August 17, 2023, just a year after being diagnosed with glioblastoma. Andrew was a tall, strong, competent, handsome and kind man. He was a natural gentleman. Born in Cambridge, MA in 1953, he grew to become an accomplished physician, a lifelong athlete, a dear friend to many over decades, a head over heels devoted husband to his amazing wife Joy, the father of two wonderful sons, Samuel Dodds of Chicago and Jake Dodds of Salt Lake, the stepfather of three wonderful daughters, Brittany Howell (Nate), Amy Little (Nate) and Alisa Henderson (Tom), all of Salt Lake and the grandfather of ten grandchildren, whose cheerful invasions he tolerated with great amusement. He is survived by many other relatives including his sister Margot Dodds of Lakeview, Oregon and brother Paul Dodds of Little Rock, Arkansas. Andrew wore his accomplishments lightly, including a BA from Harvard College, MD from Dartmouth, internship at UCLA and residency and MPH from University of Washington. He was a respected physiatrist at Intermountain Health for over 20 years, after working at Dartmouth. He served thousands of patients with care, intelligence, dignity and efficiency. Andrew was renowned for moving briskly, cooking well, loving nature, traveling widely and voracious curiosity. He died well, but too young, accepting with astonishing grace his grim illness. He will and deserves to be deeply missed by those whose lives he touched. Funeral services will be held at the City View Mortuary in Salt Lake at 4 PM on Sunday August 20, 2023, with a reception immediately following. For those unable to attend in person, the Zoom meeting ID is 817 0760 0453. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Andrew's name to The Inn Between, Helping Hands for Haiti, Planned Parenthood or use the link on the Legacy website to plant a tree in his honor. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to friends, family and healthcare workers for lifting us with your love and thoughtfulness during this painful journey.

I can't believe it's been 2 years since Andrew left us. I was a nurse on the Rehab unit and worked with Andrew for many years. He was an amazing doctor who respected the nurses he worked with. I considered him a friend and respected him as a doctor. He took such great care of his patients and was invested in their outcomes. He had a great love for dark chocolate and I loved dropping off bags of Dove dark chocolates on his desk so he always had them available. We lost and amazing man far to soon. I will miss him and his kindness forever.

We ran almost daily when we were fellows together, or we biked, and we lifted weights. We joked that while we were supposed to be clinical scholars we were in fact on the clinical athlete track. He was gracious and kind and we just enjoyed one another. He did his very best to educate my palate and taste for wine, but alas I'm from the Ozarks and was placed here, among other reasons to challenge Andrew's patience. I found him so non-judgmental and accepting and will remember him that way. "Dare to be average" he'd say to me, and I used that phrase to learn self-compassion.

Andrew leaves a very tall hole in our hearts. There was so much in him to admire. He was authentic-a deep thinker, clear in his values, and could wield a potato peeler with grace and good humor.
May those whom he loved so dearly be comforted by a wealth of memories.

I worked with Andrew for 12 years on the Intermountain Healthcare Neuro Rehabilitation Center. I learned so much from him! I loved his love for dark chocolate and I occasionally put a bag of Dove Dark Chocolates on his desk for holidays and we I felt I wanted him to know he was appreciated. I now have his love for dark chocolate. I love that he cared for his patients and family members with his heart. He had a heart of gold and was always willing to listen to the nurses and therapists input about care and treatments for his patients. I sadly was forced into early retirement and missed working with Andrew from 2013 to the end of his career. I knew he was always interested in helping me to find ways to treat my Fibromyalgia and Lupus Symptoms. I know all of his staff loved him dearly. He forever touched my life by his example. The work lost a great man far to soon. I'm sending healing thoughts and prayers to his family and friends. Thank you for sharing him with us!!
