Thomas Bolt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 13, 2025.
Thomas Edward Bolt, age 65, adoring father and husband; unparalleled storyteller and poet; devoted uncle, brother-in-law, and son; and unwavering friend, died peacefully in Toronto on January 21st, 2025, surrounded by family, a year after being diagnosed with glioblastoma. His singular loyalty and affection for his family and friends; his boundless curiosity, tenacity, perspicacity, and playfulness are profoundly missed. Until the end, Tom continued to create, and find solace and meaning - which he shared with loved ones - in the literature that had sustained and inspired him throughout his life.

Tom faced the many challenges of his disease with bravery, good humour, and generosity towards his family, close friends, and caregivers who accompanied him through his illness. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Sophie Claire Forrester, their daughter, Vera Josephine Forrester Bolt - the greatest source of joy and meaning in his life - his mother and stepfather Josephine and Bates Littlehales of Keller, Virginia, and cousin Joey Robertson of Pfafftown, North Carolina. He is pre-deceased by his father, Wade Haskell Bolt, Jr.

Born on November 21, 1959 in Washington, D.C., Tom evinced prodigious creative gifts early on. He won a pre-college scholarship to the Corcoran School of Art and graduated, cum laude, in English and Art from the University of Virginia. Among Tom's literary distinctions are an O. Henry Prize for short fiction, the Rome Prize for Literature, and the Yale Younger Poets Prize, selected by poet James Merrill. His writing has appeared in n+1, BOMB, the Paris Review, Epiphany, Literary Imagination, among other publications. Tom's work has been featured in several anthologies and translated into Italian and Russian. His paintings were shown in group exhibitions in New York City, and a hand-printed book of his poems and etchings, Land, is in the rare book collections of the Library of Congress and the University of Virginia. Tom's collaborations with composer, Sebastian Currier, have been performed in New York City and Philadelphia.

Over the course of his life, Tom resided in Washington D.C.; Reston, Lucketts, and Charlottesville, Virginia; Pendleton County, West Virginia; East Orange, New Jersey; and New York City, where he lived for almost 30 years and met his wife, Sophie. A year in Rome, Italy as Literature Fellow at the American Academy in Rome engendered many lasting friendships and an enduring fascination with the Urbs Aeterna. In 2015, together with his wife and daughter, Tom immigrated to Toronto and enthusiastically embraced life in Canada.

Sophie and Vera extend deep gratitude to family and friends who brought comfort, companionship, and laughter into Tom's and their lives during his illness. In particular, the family wishes to acknowledge the generosity and commitment of friends who came from near and far to share memories and precious moments with Tom as he approached the end of his life. Special thanks to sister Alison and dear friends Jan, Christie, and Ann, for their immeasurable love and support. Also, Darius, Donia, Robert W., Renée, and Dabney, and the dedicated professionals both at home and in hospice: thank you.

Memorial service and celebration of life will be held in the Spring. Donations in Tom's memory can be made to the Toronto Wildlife Centre and the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care at Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital, through the Sinai Health Foundation.

One day I went there to help Thomas walk and he told me that he really wanted to buy something for Sophie since it was their wedding anniversary. So I offered to go buy some roses since it was raining lightly, but he insisted that he wanted to go out and buy them himself something nice her favourite (pink tulips, Then I texted Sofia and to let her know that we were going for a 25-minute walk even though he said it was only a 12-minute walk. The 12 minutes passed by I asked again, is it close to where we are going? Yes, we arrived in about 5 minutes, nothing. We walked for 38 minutes and 48 seconds I told him that he tricked me.
He also asked me to take a picture for him to send to Sophie showing how handsome he was I confesse I was a bit worried about him since it was raining and he hadn't slept well the night before. He had a nice coincidence when he got to the market!!! Guess who we saw?!! The most unexpected & beautiful encounter, his inspiring Sophie buying tulips too. they got a nice and unexpected date .

I knew Tom's work, and we met at a party at the Brooklyn loft of a visual artist, in 1996. Tom, and his wife, Sophie, had kind words to say about a story I'd had in BOMB magazine at the time, and the two of them, and my [late] husband and I stood around talking for a bit, and they were so warm and real. It's always a bonus when you admire someone's work, as I did Tom's, and find the person who made the work is as terrific as the work that's been made. Though the contact had been brief, and long ago, I felt a
genuine sense of sorrow at the news.

I met Tom many years ago when he was a student at the University of Virginia and I was a visiting professor in the art department in the fall semester of 1980.
I liked and admired Tom a great deal and was delightfully a couple years later when came to California a few years later to visit. Though we lost touch years ago, I always remembered him as a wonderfully alive, interesting and intelligent young poet/artist. But it was only yesterday, when I pulled `Out of the Woods´ from my bookshelf for a re-read and then decided to look him up, that I learned of his death. I am so saddened by this news. We have all lost a singular vivid voice, an inspiration and loving spirit.
My best wishes to his family and the fortunate few whose lives he touched and enriched. He lives on in my heart. Godspeed, Tom.

Tom was one of my older sister Jan's friends when I was growing up and he has been an inspiration to me my whole life. His wholehearted pursuit of the creative life, and the life of the mind, undertaken while also being an amazing friend, a wonderful family man, and source of life and energy to everyone around him should be the template that we all try to live by. He was a wonderful creator and artist but his life was his true masterpiece.

Sophie and Vera,
Sorry to hear of Tom's passing. Tom was always interesting to talk to and was always interested in other people's experience and life adventures. He was a champion of the English language and the proper use of grammar. We will miss Tom's wit and take on life.

We always looked forward to having Tom´s family over for dinner. He had such an appreciation for good food, and it made every meal feel special. Tom´s knowledge of different cultures and world events always amazed us. We were constantly fascinated by how much he knew and how he could talk about almost anything with such depth and insight.

But it wasn´t just his wisdom that stood out. He was the best storyteller, and I always eagerly anticipated his visits, wondering what captivating tale he would share next. His laughter was infectious, and his smile could light up any room.

Tom was a truly kind soul, and his presence always brought warmth and joy. We will miss him deeply.

As a copywriter, Tom was a great colleague. He was a wonderful collaborator with smart ideas and a willingness to listen to suggestions. More importantly, Tom was an amazing person. He was incredibly kind and always willing to help where needed. Reading about all his other accomplishments in life makes him even more endearing. He will be missed.

Tom was always good for a laugh and he told the best stories. We'll miss him at dinner parties and during holidays. One of our fondest memories of Tom is when we visited him, Sophie, and Vera in Erieau, Ontario. We're not a cottage family, but Tom's sense of youthful adventure made the experience so much fun. One afternoon, we all went to the lake and we'll never forget that Tom looked like he was having way more fun than the kids!
Tom was a wonderful mix of intellect, curiosity, tenderness, humour, generosity, and kindness. We will miss his spirit and the love he showed for his family and friends. Rest in peace, dear friend.

So many great memories of hanging with Tom in the lower east side of NYC he knew every cool spot & inspired us to get into the specialty bar biz in Toronto in 2007
When Sophie & Tom moved to Toronto we got to hang in backyard in little Italy for what would always be a memorable conversation and he usually brought out some delicious cocktails.
Probably the best dad i´ve ever met.
