Thomas C. Buell

I had the great pleasure to have Professor Buell for two classes at PSU back in the mid 1970's.
Creative writing & a class about literature of the Western frontier.
How memorable is my studying under him....his humor, his perceptiveness....I shall always appreciate him & shall never forget him.

I knew Tom more through his art than his actual presence. During the year I lived in the house on Skyline, I often stared at the whimsical pictures and signs on the walls such as one that read, To Boats." I tried to imagine the man who created these works - he must have loved being on the water, words, whimsy. He must have loved as well living in a setting that while in Portland city limits felt like a country, bucolic in the summer, exposed to the worst of weather in the winter. That Tom died at Hopewell House seems fitting since the year I lived with my young family in that house, Tom and Joan were in England so that Joan could learn from the Brits how to bring hospice care to Portland. I am so sorry for your loss, Joan. From my perspective, you and Tom had a marriage of true minds, as Shakespeare defined that ideal state.

I'm not sure I'll show up for the funeral that Len Carr told me about when I walked by his house the other evening, because I would feel a bit of an outsider. But either way, my thoughts will be with you, Joan.

Condolences to Tom's family and friends. My memories endure when Sunday afternoon poetry writers met in his living room, to critique each other's writing.

I feel so privileged to have been able to share gallery walls and space with Tom, I will miss him greatly.

Chance, or karma, or something brought us together as "neighbors" in the dining room of a cruise ship. We will be forever grateful for that chance meeting a few short years ago because you enriched our lives. Our hearts are with all of you.

Tom was an excellent teacher and a fine man. I took a creative writing class from him in the late sixties at Portland State. Great pictures --thanks for sharing.
