I did not know Tom, but I know his family. That tells me the story about the kind of man he was. I love life, and so did he! He was an asset to all he came in contact with and those people were so lucky to have had him in their midst. I pray for Gods` covering now and always and will be thinking of you all Monday. Finding the words to say goodbye has been hard. Tom and I go back to C141 days - 15 years ago, when I was a new loadmaster at the 728th AS at McChord, and he was coming back to our squadron as a loadmaster. Tom befriended me, and always offered help and advice to assist me in learning. We shared odd common things - growing up in Germany, military backgrounds, and the treasure of family. Tom always spoke very highly of his mother and sister. He bragged a lot about them, and that was so cool! Our friendship didn't end when Tom left us to go back to Alaska. Many years later, VJ and I were at Karshi Kahanabad with the C17 and Tom was on the 130. What a place to run into someone across the world, but that was actually very typical. We picked up conversation like we had just seen each other the day prior - even tho it had been years. We were able to catch lunch at the chow hall with him, and catch up on life. He talked proudly of his new life and new wife. He spoke with such passion when he talked about Theresa, he had found true love. But I can't end this memory mushy - I have to end it with the way it really ended. We got a tour of Tom's 130, and there was a purple heart painted on the outside not too far off of the entrance door. I inquired why it had the purple heart on it ..... and Tom smirked and told the story of the gun that was discharged by him on the plane accidentally, so when they fixed the plane, they put the purple heart on it !! We all laughed so hard, but that was our Tom. Later on, he met my husband on the phone when he called to chat, and he would tell my husband that he needed to do real salmon fishing up there with him - and the standard Tom "come and visit" invite followed. He was a big part of many lives, and was always willing to give more than he took, and he would always be the champion for the under dog. We will miss our friend tremendously, and know that we are better people for having had him in our lives - reminding us daily of the the important things in life. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom's family and friends, and I know when I meet Tom in heaven later ... he will most likely be standing by a cloud with a purple heart on it. Rest in peace my friend, until we meet and catch up next time. God Bless
