Thomas Courtney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 14, 2025.
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce Thomas C. Courtney passed peacefully in his sleep on September 7, 2025.

Thomas was born on November 11,1938 in The Irish Valley, known as Heckscherville, PA. He was born to Michael E. Courtney and Anna B. Kulpcavage. Tom was pre-deceased by his loving wife Stephanie Courtney and his brother Michael E. Courtney, and is survived by his two sons, Timothy and Matthew Courtney, his daughter-in-law Kerry, and his three grandchildren Liam, Molly and Finn.

Tom was well known for the spring in his step, sense humor, and antics, which earned him the childhood nickname, "Bounce". Tom spent his youth carousing and rough-housing his way around Schuylkill County, PA.

Tom served as a no-combatant member of the Army during the Kennedy administration. As a veteran, he took a job with The Bell system AT&T. His job as a lineman took him all across the

country putting up phone-lines. Eventually, Ma-Bell brought him to Buffalo, NY where he met and fell in love with Stephanie M. Golmbiewski. Thomas and Stephanie were married in

Buffalo, NY on May 4th, 1968.

Tom and Stephanie were always the life of the party. They were friends with the Buffalo Bills quarterback and head Cheerleader, and loved to go out with them. Tom's dynamic personality led him to meet many of the football greats that came through Buffalo at the time. Meeting at local bars meant they would try and drink each other under the table - a fact that Tom always loved to tell stories about.

Tom's job required he and Stephanie to move to Connecticut, and then to Cheektowaga, NY just a few short years later. However, it was there that they were blessed with two wonderful sons Timothy M. Courtney and Matthew S. Courtney. Stephanie opened her own hair salon and Tom continued to moved up the ranks in the Bell system. Tom's skills became so elite that he was called to work on the Transatlantic Cable break.

The Courtney family was relocated once again, in 1980, to the perfect home in Goshen, NY, and finally settled down. Thomas and Stephanie stayed there until retirement, and absolutely loved the area and the friends they made along the way.

After retiring from AT&T, Tom consulted for Verizon, and bought a small laundromat. His heart of gold shone bright, but his antics never ceased. He always made sure the migrant workers that frequented his business received a free and safe ride home. He sponsored a youth baseball team. He played pranks. During a particularly bad snow storm, when even a 24 hour donut shop closed, yet left the lights on for security, Tom fashioned a fake doorbell out of a ball and a brass ring, put it on the door frame of the Grand Union Plaza Dunkin Donuts, (next door to his laundromat), and sat back rolling with laughter as he watched desperate people try to get someone to open the door.

Tom's brother Michael E. Courtney lived in the Fort Mohave/Bullhead City, AZ area. They always loved Las Vegas and thought the proximity of Fort Mohave to Laughlin, NV was a

perfect place to retire. It seemed like it would be fun, so they built a new house and spent the next 25 years enjoying each other, going to the Casinos and pressing their luck. Tom always

did well at the Poker tables and Stephanie loved her slots. They built a new home where they spent 25 years together.

Tom will be missed, and we give solace that he has rejoined his wife. We will always keep him close in our hearts. Please make donations to Alzheimer's research instead of

sending flowers.
