I only met Tom Dyer once, but he left quite an impression on me and I admired his work. My dear friend Professor Derrick Alridge introduced me to him a few years ago at UGA when I gave a talk there. Professor Dyer attended my lecture on W. E. B. Du Bois and then joined us for lunch. He regaled us with stories of his many years as an historian, spoke of his book on Theodore Roosevelt and the Idea of Race, and discussed the changes for the better that were made in race relations in the South during his lifetime. He was truly a Gentleman and a Scholar. When we parted ways he said to us "Thank you. What a nice way to spend an afternoon." He was truly a fine human being. My sympathies go to out to his family

Tom was a great scholar and, more importantly, a decent human being. I met Tom when he was still editor of the Georgia Historical Quarterly even as he was knee-deep in valuable administrative work as a Vice President. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends....

Dr. Dyer was a rare man of exceptional grace, humility, and scholarly achievement. It was my good fortune to have helped him with his history of the University, and the University is a sadder place today for his loss.

I went to high school with tom and he was special from the first. Everyone knew he was going to be one of the great achievers of our class and he certainly proved us right. Quiet and modest about his abilities with a dry wit many were proud to call him friend. Later as a fellow historian I read his books and articles with awe and a pride in knowing him. Only two things meant more to Tom than his profession and work Anna and Elizabeth. I wish for them now peace and blessings. Nancy

I want to extend my deepest sympathy to Anna, Elizabeth, and the entire family. It's been a long time since I had seen him, but I still have fond memories of coming over to Tom and Anna's house as a child. Then later in life he assisted me with getting accepted at the University of Georgia. Tom was a good friend to our family. Thank you for everything Tom.

His work with Dr. Jim Day to benefit the educational success of students in the residence halls, particularly the establishment of academic initiatives, will be part of the large legacy he leaves.
