Thomas Gabel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 3, 2024.
Thomas "Tom" Gibson Gabel, 65, of Decatur, AL, passed away of natural causes on September 2, 2024.

Tom was born on Christmas Day in West Chester, Pennsylvania to Thomas R Gabel and Eleanor Gabel. He grew up in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and attended Mechanicsburg High School. He later studied criminal justice at Mansfield University and Fairleigh Dickinson University before joining the military. Tom served in the United States Marine Corp and later the United States Army.

Tom was known for his musical talents. A gifted piano player that could play any tune by ear, he performed at many parties, restaurants, and events. He made a lasting impact on all those that struggle with addiction as he worked tirelessly at Bradford Health Services for many years.

Tom Gabel is survived by his daughters, MaryClare Gabel and Olivia Gabel, his brother, Robert Gabel, and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas R Gabel and Eleanor Gabel, and his sister Alison Gabel-Dietterick and brother-in-law Blake Dietterick.

A memorial will be held in Pennsylvania at a later time and date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Still Serving Veterans an Alabama non-profit organization that serves and honor Veterans and their families located at 626 Clinton Ave, W STE 200 Huntsville, Alabama 35801.

Robert, Olivia, and MaryClare,
I'm praying that you can be comforted by many warm memories of your brother and father.
Tommy was a close cousin to me in age, and I have many memories of playing together in Parkesburg, and of visiting at his home in Lionville. (And, yes, of the old picture of the three of you with mumps!) Of course, Tommy's rollicking piano playing and performances with the Baptones stand out as highlight memories.
I feel for you all in the multiple losses you've had this last year. Your family was always so close, and you truly enjoyed each other. May those memories help you through these difficult days.
Love,
(Cousin) Jennifer Coates Burdge

My first memory of my cousin Tommy is him playing the piano. His fingers flew over the keys making fun and lively music. I send his family, especially my cousin Robert (Bob), my deepest condolences. I wish we were all kids again enjoying a family celebration playing games. Too many are lost to us but we'll all play again in Heaven.

Family gathering at Christmas with Tommy on the piano banging out carols by ear. So much talent.

The funniest time was looking at old pictures of when the 3 of us kids had the mumps at the same time.
