Thomas Halligan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 22, 2023.
Thomas (Tom) Patrick Halligan, passed October 14, 2023, just shy of his 82nd birthday.

Born in Chicago on November 13, 1941 to Mary Catherine (née Egan) and John Francis Halligan, who immigrated from Cartownacross, Claremorris, County Mayo, Ireland in 1926 and 1911 respectively to make Chicago their new home, live a full life and have a family.

'Tommy' was the youngest of 5: John, Mary Ellen James, Margaret (Peggy) Scullion & James (Jimmy). His father, John, was a hotel doorman and mother, Mae, worked at home raising her family. Tom was a proud Irish American, a voracious reader, a student of history, and lots of fun to be around! He attended De La Salle High School in Chicago. He was the first in his family to attend college, graduating from Loyola University after many years of night school, while working and raising a family. Tom retired from Duff & Phelps, Inc a Chicago Investment Research Firm, in March 1990 after a very successful career, advancing from entry level roles to the Group Vice President of the Utilities Division.

In retirement, since 1992, he made Tucson home, but kept his allegiance to Da Bears and the Chicago Cubs. He served as the President of Literacy Volunteers Tucson, helping build their headquarters, and taught English to recent immigrants and inmates, believing in the power of education to transform lives. He was a longtime docent and volunteer at the Catalina State Park, visiting daily for walks with his standard poodle, Harry. Tom traveled with his wife, Marcia to all of Ireland, the Mediterranean, London, Paris, the Black Sea, St. Petersburg, and Scandinavia. His favorite places were Ephesus Turkey, and Rome, Italy.

He was curious, a continuous learner, had a strong point of view and easily shared it! He also hosted countless St. Patrick's Day celebrations and other parties. He LOVED being social. He left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him. As we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life well-lived, rich in love, learning, and the joy of sharing that with others.

Tom leaves Marcia (née Johnson), his loving wife, and constant companion of over 40 years, his dear sister Peggy, children Margaret (Christoper) Wrobel, Cathy (Zoon Nguyen), Noreen and Tom, grandchildren Andrew, Sean, Thomas, Patrick, Jacob, Samuel, Joseph, Halli, Cassidy, Kaitlyn, Megan and Nancy, great grandchildren Jackson and Emma, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his first wife of 19 years, Noreen Judith (née Lynch), and daughter Mary Marra.

In honor of Tom, read a book, cheer on Da Beers, celebrate St. Patty's Day every day of the year and enjoy those you love.
