Thomas Haugstad Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 25, 2025.
Thomas (Tom) Ray Haugstad

January 8, 1941 - June 17, 2025

Thomas R. Haugstad, a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025 at the age of 84, surrounded by his immediate family.

Born in Everett, WA, on January 8, 1941, Tom graduated from Everett High School before proudly serving in the United States Navy with honor and distinction. After his military service, Tom began a career with the Everett Fire Department where he worked for 37 years, rising through the ranks to Battalion Chief. His career was defined by his professionalism, integrity, and high standards-qualities that earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the community.

After retiring, Tom enjoyed a well-deserved break, spending much of his time on the golf course and enjoying his favorite hobbies. Tom loved road trips with his bride of 35 years, Sandi, as well as camping, woodworking, carving, cooking, and, notably, perfecting the art of pizza-making in his wood-fired pizza oven. Tom's true gift, however, was his ability to entertain. Whether telling captivating stories or sharing his quick wit, he had a unique ability to bring joy and laughter to everyone around him.

Tom is survived by his devoted wife, Sandi Haugstad; his son, Brock Haugstad (Shelley) and his daughter Brooke Ford (Tom "TJ"); his step-sons, Michael Dormer (Nicole) and Chris Dormer (Misty); his brothers, Terry Haugstad (Vicki) and Bob Farr; his sister, Rhona Jean Bullington; his 9 grandchildren; and 2 great-granddaughters. He is preceded in death by his mother, Rhona Farr, and his brother, Ted Haugstad.

A Memorial service will be held on August 23, 2025, starting at 1:00 at the Everett Firefighters Hall, located at 2411 Hewitt Avenue, Everett WA 98201. The family invites all who knew and loved Tom to join in honoring his remarkable life and legacy.

I met Ted Haugstad in the70's at the Everett Tavern when he was plant manager for Cablevision which was a few blocks away. It was also a go to place for Everett Firefighters since it was owned by one of their own. We stayed best of friends and I met his brothers Tom and Terry at that time as well as his mom Rhona. He was best man at my wedding, I also stayed inconstant contact with Tom. I was very fortunate to have a nice visit with him at the recovery center he was at 9 days before his passing. The pictures of Tom were at a birthday party and a monthly lunch get together for Everett Firefighters and a few others that was started by ex Fire Chief Doug McNall. When he passed away I continued setting up the meetings. The lunch picture was taken in June of 2022. It was snapped before others had showed up. Tom and his brother Ted were joined by myself and Doug's son which many of us called Little Doug.

Rest In Peace Chief. You were the first Battalion Chief I worked for, and I still remember my first "invite" to your office, and I'll never forget the "corrective" visit a couple of years later. Between those two opportunities and beyond you were a great man to know and call a friend. Your awesome stories and sage advice are memorable.

Tom was a close friend for over 40 years. He was a mentor to me throughout my fire department career, a golfing partner, camping buddy, personal carpenter, and favorite storyteller. He was friend that you could always depend on. He was a proud member of the Reno six, with myself, Rex Tucker, Jim Schwartz, Mike Lambert, and Johnny Smith. He was our built in entertainment, telling story after story until our cheeks hurt. I will miss you my friend. Little Mike.
